52180, AFX Race ECU Posted by TalonSpeed, May-30-03 11:10 AM
Who on here has an AFX ECU?? How long did it take u to get it?? How did u like it?
I have a 1996 Eagle Talon 5spd, and since AFX doesn't make ECUs for 1996 cars, I bought a spare 97 computer from Steve.
I plugged the 97 ECU into my 1996 Talon and everything worked just like it did with my stock ECU. I let it idle, ran around the block, did 100+ on highway, and checked all fuses and bulbs. Everything works fine. I even installed an EGR block off kit and let it idle. Still no CEL, no stutter, and the car works in all gears including reverse.

The 97's have to sell A LOT better before he will come out with any other years. If you plan to turbo in the future though, don't waste your money. The AFX ecu advances timing like a mofo, not good with turbo.

I got mine in 9 weeks, so far I would have to say that the gains are not as good as I was expecting after reading a couple of reviews from other afx ecu owners. Im gonna dyno my car soon to see exactly what gains exist between the stock ecu and the afx ecu, i'll keep you guys posted.
Only thing I would recommend if you order one, don't bug them about the order status they might send you a regular ecu just for being a pain in the ass. :wary

my ecu will be tested at track pretty soon. since i can't do shit with my arm while its healing, mystic is gonna pop it in for one of his runs, he gets a 16.1 consistent now.

hmmm, if 97 works on a 96, and 96 are more different from a 97 than 97s are from 99's, shouldn't 96s, 97s, 98s, and 99s all work on an eclipse that's 96+??? (AKA OBDIIs are interchangable)???? or is this a ):nono

I know for a fact that a 97 will not work in a 99. We did not try a 98, but i personally think tha it will not work either. Will a 97 work in a 98? maybe. Doubt it.
Someone try it and prove me wrong.

96 and 97 are interchangleable. I have a hunch that 99 and 98 are interchangleable. The difference is not that the programming is very different on all the ECUs but the pin outs on the ECUs are different. If you look closely the 96 and 97 have grey plastic plugins where as 99 have black plugins. I'm sure the 98 has black pugins.

So will the AFX ECU work in my 96 Talon with no ill effects?? I was bummed when I found out it was only 97s. It's a MT btw. I am going part show, part go, so I don't wanna go turbo, 3K is almost as much as I paid for my car in the first place. Anyway, does anyone know if it will work for sure??? TIA

Well if a stock 97 ECU worked on my Talon and no CEL for two days now, I would think the AFX ECU would work also, but I am not for sure. I emailed Howell on when I could get it reprogrammed but they haven't emailed me back yet.
How in the world does Howell\AFX except to sell these ECUs when: -they are not even listed on their site as being available -the wait period is so long -there is no listing of what is done and what to expect from the ECU

i talked to howell yesterday and they said for the 99 ecu guys to call back in three months. So they are making steps forward for the other ecu's.:thumbsup

No you must pay 540 up front and after 9 weeks when you recieve the race ecu from howell, you then send your stocker to them and once they recieve it, howell will then credit you 150 bucks. So in the end the afx ecu ends up costing you 390.
