I was reading in the 2gnt 420a overhaul manual about the timing belt process since I'm right at 60k miles. Anyway...it lists 6 different special tools that are used in the process and I was wondering if these are really needed or if I can get by with what I got? TIA!

Here are the tools listed:

mb995055 - Removal puller damper
mb995057 - Removal crankshaft damper/sprocket
md998719 - Pin (2)
md998713 - Installer camshaft oil seal
mb995035 - Installer crankshaft damper/spocket
mb990767 - End yoke holder

A good 5 ton puller that can be rented. Metric tools and special tool #1234678 = Band-Aid's Spider Man style!

i would recomend these if possible, you have to have the puller for sure and the pin. the pin is for the tensioner. you can try to use something else but it better be strong as fuck. i had a nail through it the first time and it bent. i got mine from mitsu, i just went in and asked the mechanics if they had any laying around from new ones that they had installed.

You'll need the 5 ton 3 arm puller.
Unless you plan on replacing the oil seals (which most don't do) you can leave the crank sprocket on.
The rest are just nuts and bolts
For the re-installation of the crank pulley you'll need to buy a bolt for the crankshaft about an inch longer than the stock one. Not less than a grade 8.8 bolt, preferably a grade 10.9.

*edit* I use an 8" C Clamp to compress the timing belt tensioner and an allen wrench to hold the pin in, yeah it bends a little but doesn't snap.

I used the Allen also. Don't bother with the oil seal unless it's leaking.

Thanx for the info guys. So the "mb995055 - Removal puller damper" is really just a 5 ton 3 arm puller that I should be able to just rent from Autozone...right? Also where can I get the "mb990767 - End yoke holder", or what could I use as an equivalent tool?

if you have air tools you won't need it. you dont have to have it to change the timing belt, its just a bitch to keep the cams from rotating while your trying to torque the cam gear bolts.
