51978, DIY P&P on head?
Posted by DR1665, May-27-03 02:08 PM
I was wondering, can I take the trusty Dremel and some SimiChrome polish to my valves without affecting anything negatively? I plan on grinding out the TB and port matching my manifolds, but the head's gonna stay stock (for now). I'd just like to clean it up and maybe smooth things out a little bit. Any input as to my options here? TIA!

you shouldn't mess with the chambers cause if you remove anything from them it will lower your compression.

Here's a pretty good article on head porting - http://www.sa-motorsports.com/diyport.htm

yep got that kit helped a lot. You should buy a real die grinder a dremel will take forever and you can't use the stuff in that kit. I sugest getting the kit. P&P is a long process haha took me weeks to port and polish my head and manifolds.

Basically what you wanna do is gasket match all the openings so air will flow smoothly from the manifold to the heads. Some of the flanges need MAJOR grinding like the exhuast side or the intake manifold runners. First you use a stone to take lotsa material out then you use a cartridge roll to fine tune your porting. Then you smoothen it out with 60 grit roll then smoothen out even more with a 120 grit flap wheel. Then finally polish it with WD40 and a crossbuff.

I didn't do it but you might also wanna take the valves out so you can port out the openings also.

I want to warn about home head porting. If you have no clue what you are doing, read A LOT. You can easily mess it up if you are not careful. And another key is uniformity, try to get all ports to match exactly, that's why a good shop will P&P with a flow bench so they match the flow numbers of each, port.

Thanks for the heads-up guys. I think I'll just leave it alone for now, but is there a convenient way to maybe decarbon or clean up the valves while the head's off? I know that STP fuel additive crap doesn't exactly cut it, ya know? Mabe I could just spray it down with something before I put it back on? TIA! :thumbsup
