51613, what are the main problems related to the UDP Posted by ThE oRACLe, May-22-03 05:55 AM
anyone have any knowledge of the actual problems that occur? such as noises or worse ? since ive gotten the udp ive heard its light metalic sound from under the wheel well ... it sounds worse now. i have the unorthadox pulley btw

Mettalic sound? could you describe it any different? I've ever heard of such a problem related to the UDP...
The only thing I ever noticed was after the cams after hot and a while of idling my voltage would drop to 12 volts instead of the steady 14 before, which isn't a big deal at idle, still enough to run. I installed an overdrive pulley on my alternator when I did the headgasket and voltage is a solid 14 volts now... (at least for the short time it ran since...) with the extra compression etc I don't want to take any chances with the ignition and voltage... since I have the CD box and coil pack. But no mettalic sounds...

ill tell you the facts your looking for. All of these under drive crankshaft pulleys that are sold for our car are not balanced. they are not precision parts, therefore not the quality that my car deserves. Do you know what my favorite race shop did when i ordered all of my maintenence parts from them (all oem at cheapest price avail) and asked to add an udp to the order? they refused to sell it to me. they can get them, just like they can get every other part, but they don't sell them to people unless they insist. they could have made their quick cut and sold me an udp on the spot, but a happy returning customer is always better. If you had a different engine with a wider range of aftermarket support, like a b series honda or something, you could easily get a quality balanced crankshaft pulley for your car and sleep well at night. so find a few hp somewhere else and save the headaches. good luck man, try and throw on some hardcore cams sometime soon, thats what im going for here in a few weeks or so.

But in reality the weight of the underdrive pulley is so little, and is cut from a stock piece of aluminum which should have very little variation in desity across it, there's no balancing issues.
And onto our stock crank pulley... it's is much heavier so any variations in density it has would have greater effect on the crank. Putting all that aside we don'e have a harmonic balancer. Our crank is internally balanced not an external balance like the 4G63. They have a harmonic balancer, which is a keyed to the crank because it purposefully balanced to help reduce vibration and help the crank move along.
For the 420A you don't want something offset weighted. You want a pulley as close to uniform density as you can get. AFX and Unorthodox CNC cut the pulley's from stock aluminum, how much more precision are you looking for? There will be NO engine damage from running either AFX or Unorthodox Pulley on your car. It's not like putting an unbalanced pulley on a 4G63 or an old Chevy V-8 that has a harmonic balancer pulley.

^^^^ What he said. I agree 100%. Get the UDP, that shop prob couldn't get him an UDP and made up some lame story about balancing. The reality is, it will have no harm to the engine and many many people use them and have no issues with them.. One thing to watch tho is the belt shreading problem... If the pulley isn't torque to spec it may start to shred belts because they will not be aligned with the PS/AC and alternator pulleys.

Yes the pulley needs to be installed properly and pulled all the way on the crank. Check the things seen before I movesd a trhead about install and Howell gives a paperclip trick to check allignment.

the only problem which i have noticed with mine is belt noise, but i wouldn't really say that is a problem. later "Z"

Had mine since November. Installed it myself and have had no problems to speak of except a little belt noise when I first got it.
I have the AFX pulley that I bought from ptuning.com for about $150 shipped. Excellent power gain and its totally worth it imo.

haha im not trying to deny the fact that you guys can run your aftermarket udp on our cars without too many problems, but likewise, you cant compare the quality to of these udp's to a nice balanced quality part. as for your comment on the shop, go ahead and ask http://www.prostreetonline.com yourself and get schooled. they are dsm specialists, and build amazing machines of every other caliber that you couldn't begin to comprehend. they know what the fuck their talking about, yes including our nifty little 420a. enjoy.

I dont think we have anything to worry about.
I'm not trying to be disrespectful, but ... why are you so down on the AFX pulley? Bad experience? Trying to sell your own? Repeating what someone told you?
I'm just trying to see why you have a different opinion from the 100's of people who have done this, and still have no problems to date.

I have the unorthodox UDP with no problems. Any time you mod your car you take a chance with something going wrong:thumbsup

because a fact is a fact, its not balanced and nobody's hiding that. and im a perfectionist. to each his/her own. understand where im comming from yet? i sure understand both sides of this. enough said.

hmm.. i wonder why they sell the AEM underdrive pulley sets on their site if they are so against aftermarket "unbalanced" pulleys?

well, you may be a perfectionist, but you are also a pompous ass. chill out. If poeple want to do this to their car that's their opinion.
why don't you do us all a favor and design and build a balanced pulley set, Mr. perfect?

Only problem I have had is a little belt chirping and I have new gator backs to put on it once I get off my lazy ass :) The AFX is great.

No probs at all here with the AFX pulley. I had it on the old motor for quite some time, and with the Bando belts it comes with, got some minor belt noise with them. Changed those out for some good belts, and its been great ever since. Just by inspecting my old main crank bearings, esp the one on the pulley side, i saw absolutely no abnormal wear on ANY of the main bearings. All looked perfect. So there is proof that the AFX does not do any harmful wear on the motor. A CNC machined piece of lightweight aluminum, will be near perfect balance anyway. If it were steel, or cast, then thats a whole diff story..

Exactly. The AFX or Unorthodox, I would bet, have a better balancee than the stock crank pulley which also is NOT balanced, it's a straight cast.

The reason i am changing out my pully for an udp is because my staock unit is out of balance. From taking it on and off so many times for head work, timing belt and other thing. It's just not the same as it used to be. even though i have followed the specs for tightening it, it know has a little wobble and can feel it in the car. The new udp i'm putting on is balance really well. I put it on the lathe to do some sanding/polishing and had no problems. I had a little extra time so i tossed on the stock unit. it felt like an unbalanced washing machine. Machine aluminum will always have a better balance than a cast steel part. With cast parts you still have to balance them after they come out of the mold. this process is done to cranks and other parts all the time. who ever says that machined parts are not all that great than the stock pieces due to balance needs to spend some time in a machine shop. Don't bash something if you don't know about it or how it's made.

what belts did you get and where did you get them. i have the pulley, and the only problem i have is belt noise. its sooooo annoying. i use belt dressing, and that gets rid of it for about 15 minutes, but then it comes back :censored
its really annoying, but thats the only problem i have. i emailed howell and they said the belts probably got glazed from not being tight enough, and they needed to be replaced. so did replacing them solve everything? thanks

I've had mine on for about a year and a half, and put about 20-30k miles on with it with no ill effects. I still have the original Bando belts on that came with it, and have no noise either. I couldn't tell you what gains it added, as I did a few other mods at the same time. I do know I like removing/installing it a lot better than the stock one though.
