5161, engine swap 2g NT to 1g turbo Posted by bud69boy, Jul-14-01 08:07 AM
I WENT TO AN ENGINE BUILDER AND ASKED HIM HOW MUCH IT WOULD COST TO GET MY 420A ENGINE REBUILT SO I CAN GO TURBO. HE TOLD ME IT WOULD BE $4000 AND I WOULD HAVE TO HAVE THE ENGINE PULLED ALREADY. SO IF YOU TAKE THAT PLUS HAHN'S STAGE 2 KIT YOUR LOOKING AT $7000. SO FOR $7000.00 I WILL STILL HAVE A ENGINE THAT CAN'T MATCH THE 4G63. I LOOKED AT 2GNT FAQ's SECTION AND THEY SAID YOU COULD SWAP IT FOR $5600 THATS PARTS + LABOR. I'M LOOKING FOR A SHOP IN SOUTHERN CALI TO PERFORM THIS SWAP.

What parts was he quoting for replacement? There is a lot of custom work that has to be done to make the 4g63 work, and it has been proven by LOTS of guys on this board that the 420A KICKS THE 4G63's ASS!! (since when has an engine had an ass?) I think you should get another quote from another place an hopefully some boosted 420A guys will step up and tell you what they spent on their rebuilds.

with a little over $2000, you can already kick a 4g63 in the ass like me. I'm satisfied with my Star performance Stage 1 turbo kit. It did me good and that's for sure.

JDM 4G63 with Cyclone intake w/ wiring harness and ECU= $1400 Rebuilt/used tranny from a 1st gen FWD= 300-500
If you can do your own labor, you have a 220bhp 4G63 in your 2G DSM for 2000 dollars. Roughly.
Not bad. And I have to say, after going through some tuning hell with my HRC stage 2 on the way to the shootout and while there, I was VERY close to selling my 420a and getting a JDM. But its running better now, so I am sticking with it until it blows.

Here I am saving money for a star stage II and you guys are finding it cheaper to swap engines with an engine I've never heard of. What is the jdm engine from? Is it cheaper to do this before I go and buy a turbo?
