51578, 2 questions before i start udp and cam install.

I will be installing these parts this weekend. I did not get new belts with the underdrive pullie. its the upd you can buy on ebay maybe 18% reduction. I was wondering on what belts to buy that are available at my local parts place (colorado). I was hoping to get some part numbers or do i use the same replacement belts for our cars. I was also wondering what setting i should start with on the adjustable cam gears. I have cai, cat back, exhaust header and port, polished, .030 milled head. I will not be heading to the dyno until the end of next month at the earliest. I have heard -2 on intake and +2 on exhaust. If i'm wrong please let me know, this would be a great help.

First thing to do it get the exhaust cam back to where it should be, probably going to be off because of the milling. You want the xhaust cam to be close to zero for the cam position sensor. Then adjust the intake cam, just play with it, see what works for you. try retarding the intake to add more overlap, that should help.

About the belts, you need to contact the people you bought it from for the sizing. Otherwise your going to have to guess at sizes. You should always be wary :wary of cheap e-bay products because they may be a scam, or may not be complete. I don't know how to get a belt size for you either, does anyone know how he can figure out the right size belt? Also don't forget to have a 5 ton 3 jaw puller to get off that stock crank pulley.

Count the ribs and use a string. pulley probably between a quarter and half way from full detensioned. wrap the string around to get the belt legnth and with the number of ribs an auto parts store should be able t get you an appropriate belt. It sucks, so first contact the seller for if nothing else belt dimensions if not part numbers.

i found some post about the same UDP and some belt numbers were given. 4040320 and 4050490, i just want make sure i can use these numbers at the parts store. If i can use original replacement belts for our cars and adjust the tensioners to make them fit, i will try that first. I also got a suggestion to change my oil pump at the same time. i ordered the pump and it will be here tomorrow. any last news or warnings before i did in?

stock belts are too big, you won't be able to tension the pulleys out far enough. and if it's an 18% the numbers you have won't work either those are for a 30% underdrive. You're going to need to contact the seller or do measurements of yoru own.

That oil pump is going to be a lot of extra work, And why would you change that with a UDP? Find a post from darkone and go into his shop manual link (in his sig) to find the oil pump stuff. Who told you you should change the oil pump at the same time?

the suggestion for the oil pump came from my mechanic buddy. I'm at 160k miles and he suggested changing the oil pump while i had everything open. I have to pull the timing belt to put on the cam gears so why not add a couple of hours of work and replace the pump. I also noticed that i have a little bit of oil around the pully and pump area. it's better to be safe than sorry, i was going to change the timing belt anyways. I did get an e-mail from the guy i bought the pully from. He said he would fax the belt spec sheet to me in a hour, and yes it is the 30% upd. This is the second time i am digging into my engine so i might as well replace/repair what has worn out i guess. wish me luck that nothing goes wrong over the weekend.

well the weekend job will turn in to a wekk long job. First off i was expecting my cams from ups friday and they never showed. I tracked the package and the last entry is marked "out for delivery". The package never showed and the customer service person did not know why my package never showed up, or if it was not delivered why then their should be another log saying back at station for redelivery. I hope it's not lost. Knowing in the mourning that the package was going to be delivered i started to take apart my engine. I had to cut one of my engine mounting bolts (the bolts that mount the side hanger to the engine)because it could not come out because of clearance problems with the frame. I don't know why it would not clear, i had no problems with it when i put my new head in. The bolt for the pully was to short to use with the 3 jaw to get it off. It took me 4 hours of calling and driving to find a place that had the correct bolt in the length i needed. lastly i found out that when i ordered the oil pump they forgot to add the cam seal to the box of parts. for some reason no one stocks this $4 part anywhere. every parts place said they would have to order it and it would be in on tuesday. every store i called even checked connecting stores to see if they could find one. Not one store in colorado carried this freaken part. So with my car down and my weekend shot i put in the parts i could and did alot of cleaning. I never knew i had so much buildup of oil and crap under my engine, frame and suspension parts. I'm glad i walk to work from where i live or i would be screwed. Hope everyone else had a fun and safe weekend.

Hey man.. lemme help you from making the same mistake i did. Is this your primary driving car, do you have an extra sitting around?

If it is, the all i have to say, is spend 300 bucks, and buy a complete long block, and do all your work on that. Take your time.. and end up with a finished block. Your basically pulling the engine anyway, with all that you have going. Hell.. while your at it.. u could prob. find a block w/less than 80k. Save the money on the oil pump, and better piston rings too. That way u car swap blocks in a day, and deff. have a car to drive. What do u think?
