51519, Is the Melling pump any better than the stock one? Posted by JustOne, May-20-03 02:25 PM
Is the melling pump really any better than the stock one? I have had my Melling on for a little more than a year now and it has sprung a leak. I just dont want to get a crap pump again.
Is the Mopar one any better than the ^^^ two? Does anyone have a part number for the Mopar one?
Thanks Brian

Where did it leak, man?
I mean, it's solid metal. If it leaks, it's probably either one of two things, neither related to the oil pump itself. One, a bad main seal or two, lack of or improper application of the anaerobic sealer.
Besides that, it's not likely to spring a leak in it, like a gasket or something.

I've heard conflicting stories about the Melling pump being just a stock replacement, but some have said it DOES give more oil pressures. I rebuilt my stock oil pump, and its been great. There really are only a few internal parts in it anyway.. If you want complete new stock replacement pump, DODGE dealer part# 4667884. On mine, i just got new internal rotors (2), new rotor cover, relief spring, and relief plunger, all costing around 50 bucks total. I found no need to replace the actual pump housing, because it was in great shape. Dodge part#'s for internal parts:
2843208- relief plunger 1737744- relief spring 4761538- new rotors(come in a set of 2, its all you need) 4556669- Rotor cover
When the oil is fully warm, I see about 25 psi at idle, and about 58-60 psi obove 1500 rpms..

I'd bet it's a leak in the seal between the pump and block or one of the other seals...
Are you pressure readings any different than stock when using the Mellings?

My oil pressures are 5-10 psi higher with the Melling over stock.
