50901, BROKEN 97 GS, wanna help? Posted by Erik, May-10-03 12:24 PM
OK I get a phone call two days ago saying that my sister's GS was DOA. I'm 100 miles from the car so I told my dad how to do the key dance and he got CEL 17. So he went and got a temp sender for the ECU and now the car won't start/ rough idle. It used to have a high idle like bad TPS. Now I can barely get it started and when it does start, it won't idle w/o my foot resting on the gas. It's smooth right at about 1500, but below that it wants to have a rough idle or dies. I pulled no codes(reset batt after new sender) and let the car idle(like shit) for about 4 min to see if it needed a little "learing" time. Still no CEL and I've cleaned the TB, IAC, and made sure there was no crap in the TPS. It runs(sorta) so it has spark, and fuel squirts from the test port when I puch the schrader valve in. Any ideas?

check the MAP sensor. i know if the ecu isn't getting a signal from it, the car will not want to stay running and when it is able to idle, it's rough and begs to die. it's something to try. check the connections to make sure it's pluged in good and clean it if you have too. later

yeah I pulled the MAP and it had some carbon around the bottom but nothing that I could see that would indicate it was bad. I'm not getting a MAP CEL either(means nothing though). Does anybody know what you can clean a MAP with?

lol why does nobody every mention the IAC when idle goes bad...considering that largly controls idle?? i had my iac go out on me and had the same symtoms...had to put foot on gas when starting and had to hold down the gas to keep her idling, would try and stall on me when i came to a stop...autozone carries replacments. oh yea, and replace what it says is wrong...maybe it is the temp sensor, try that first.

I did mention IAC. I took it out and cleaned it with carb cleaner and made sure that it could spin. It was full of carbon, but after cleaning it still won't run right. We replaced the sender to the ECU first.

check the wires from the sensors. they could be so brittle that they could not send a signal. that happened to my speed output sensor and i'm fine now. just another thing to check. later

yeah, I've unplugged and replugged everything back in. I think I'm gonna break down and go get an IAC and see if that's the culprit. She complained of high idleand I thought there was carbon build-up and the throttle plate was getting stuck(and there was a ton of crap) but it's clean now and I'm still getting shit for idle.
