50769, 420a vs 4g63
Posted by dpark, May-08-03 01:00 PM
im new to this dsm world. i got a gs. my question is, what exactly is the difference between the 420a vs teh 4g63 both stock. are they capable of the same power stock. are they capable of the same power after work on the motor. is it more costly on a 420a to push power. like reliablitlity difference. basically i want to know it all. compression whatever. EVERYTHING. ive done so much work on this car that i have a gs. and i just recently took it to the shop to paint it again with new body work. and now im looking to buy a turbo, already bought some parts for the turbo. so basically im thinking, should i just sell the car to get a gst/gsx or whatever. someone help me because ive thrown all this money in this car, and i want to know if i should even bother to put turbo in my 420a. cause i want mad power, which i know u can do off a 4g63, like how they run with 15psi with after market turbo parts and stock internals. cause ive herad u can run like 8 pounds most on the 420a. but basically my main question is, is it more costly to rebuild the 420a motor to run high boost.
plz help me and reply to this post.

As far as I've seen the 4g63 is capable of 600+ HP where the 420A is in the 500+ range. Reliability is in question with either of these motors putting out that kind of power, but I would guess both are just about as reliable as the stock as long as you take car of it. Both of these engines are capable of 30 psi of boost as well as long as you build it right!

If you already have money in the car keep it. After a stage 2 kit you will be faster than a stock 4g63 and later if you want more power you can rebuild.

ok to further discuss this. hmm
more questions.
my friend has a gst running 21 on his stock internals, he has gone through 2 head gaskets. answering the question from my main post, how hard would it be to fun 21 pounds on a 420. hard i know. but how hard.

Built internals (2000-3000)
Ignition system (600-1000)
New axles (1000-1500)
All supporting mods (1000-5000)

This is a really old question, but I'm bored. The only reasons I can think of for choosing a 2gnt over a 4g63 as a project car are:

1) You got the 2GNT for really really cheap (like under $1000)
2) You're under 25, and your insurance is really high already
3) You like the way the black doorhandles on an RS look
4) You like the challenge and don't mind spending the extra cash to get the same thing.

i love my black handles!!! well, that and the face of someone thinking that im NA and then they get to hear my bov :) i know you love that feeling to dan. haha

back to the topic.. in your particular situation, b/c you have spent so much money on the car, i would say, keep it! get a compression test and a leak down... if numbers are good boost it! 7-8lbs and youll be beating most cars on the street... and if you want to beat the rest.. rebuild, 2.2, 2.4, or 2.6L swaps :)... more fuel, ignition, timing, etc..... and you can see some very high power numbers.

i know this is kind of a old topic and all but im kind new at this "motor" stuff and i want to learn more. Right now i have this guy selling a 95 gsx no dents but the bumper and stuff is in bad shape and the motor, needs to be worked on , + i wasnt planning on keeping the motor in that car cause it has 196,000 miles. lol . the good part is im not to sure if its a good deal but he is gonna give it to me for like 4000 and i think he is gonna do it for less that that too. so i was planning on swapping the motor because it has so many miles. many of my friends are telling me to keep my car because of all the work on the body i have done, 2nd i just took it to the shop and i havent even got it back yet from getting all my new stuff done such as the big thing, a new color swap once again. i think im getting it back this weekend, but not to sure. i just want to know is the 46g3 that much better then the 420a? thats what im not to quite sure about. they said when i slap my turbo on my car right now, i'll be damn happy with the performance.

In my opinion...stock for stock, the 4G63 is definitly a significantly stronger motor. Without having to rebuild, 300+hp is not out of the question with a 4g63 while it is out of the question on a stock shortblock 420A. The 4g63 has an assload of parts available for it but the 420A is catching up in this department. In my opinion, if you want stock like reliability, your better off getting a 4G63.

i say work him down to 3,500 specially if its in need of some TLC, then rebuild the motor...

yeah ive been trying to work it down and i did alittle. iuno if i really want to go threw with buying this gsx, cause im getting my car back actually tomorrow (saturday) and its gonna be real nice i think. undecided blah. most likely it just seems im going to go with the hrc kit for my car. but if i can get some help with peoples post that know alot about swapping out the 420a to a 4g63 i just might end up doing that. i got my goals set high on the 4g63 for my car.

I agree, to a point. You can make more horsepower with the 4g63 engine for less money, but the price it would cost to put the 4g63 into the car would most likely not be the cheaper way.

i understand that the motor is costly, but how costly would it be if i were to just buy the motor, and basically build it step by step? then install it into my car? is install really that expensive?

omg please search. if you think that you can swap the motor by itself then you definately have not searched

rofl, i did search, i wasnt saying it like yeah just swap it out myself and install it like as if it was a 420a....... i meant i was gonna build the 46g3 motor with a couple of my buddies, then take the motor to the shop, for them to do the swap, im pretty sure i wouldnt be able to do it, unless i really take my time, which i dont have. so........ omg please search, yeah i did. i know about all the welding and fabrication and im sure i probably couldnt do it.

most likely though imma stick to the 420a and just turbo it up.

yes it is expensive if you wanna swap a 420a for a 4g63, the 4g63 has a completely different layout than the 420a, you would need a new tranny, and ecu as well, and labor would be very expensive! i have a 420a boosted, hrc is releasing their stage 3 in june, so you should just go with that upgrade, you will be happy with the power! stick with the 420a family....we get stronger and stronger by the day while the 4g63 remains the same!
