50567, 0wn3d! I REALLY need help... Posted by MmmDeion, May-06-03 09:22 AM
Ok heres the problem(s)... I just got my car back from the shop and they "fixed" my exhaust leek, but not I have a CEL code:
31). Evaporatice purge flow monitor failure (M/T) Evaporative purge solenoid / Clogged purge line / Vacuum hose / Evaporative emission canister clogged
Someone had posted about this earlier and told me how to fix it, but I lost the post... :rolleyes Am I screwed by drivin my car around all the time with that CEL on??
Also, when Im at a stop light my car temp guage will rise from the middle all the way to the top of the "H" on my dash?? Then it will go right back to the middle when I start drivin again... Is that caused because of the CEL or what?? Just to let you know my car is a 5-speed, so it has something to do with the "evaporatice purge flow monitor failure" :wary
Im pretty damn lost here, SOMEONE please help....

there is a thread discussing that issue right now. as for your overheating, check to make sure you have enough fluid in your cooling system. Also go by somewhere like Jiffy Lube and have them check to see if it's still protecting your system.
Do you have any kinda grill in front of your radiator? or anything blocking it?
edit* check your radiator cap as well, ive heard that if they lose pressure there your system wont be protected, also check your thermo if you can. I dont think its one of those cause you say it goes away when you drive off. Look a coupla threads down and theres info on overheating that FlyESi (?) posted.

Ive already checked that out, seein its the post right below me... But what I really wanted to know was how to fix the CEL code 31 and is thats whats causin the "spontaneous" overheatin that just happens why im idlin my car..
Anyone else? That might know how to fix that code?? And is it bad to drive my car with that CEL on??
:thumbsup

Did you read that thread? Most generally a CEL is going to be set off when an emissions device is tripped, not 100% but most of the time. Look under your hood, there should be a diagram of the entire EVAP system. Go check all your vacuum lines to make sure they arnt cracked or completely off. Also go tighten your gas cap nice and good. And no that code is not causing the over heating. Im pretty positive the cooling system and EVAP system never cross anywhere. That being said you should be alright to drive with that code on. Do like I said with the hoses and all that real carefully, undo your + batter cable and reset the ECU and see if it comes back on.

edit* check to make sure your fans are coming on as well. Check the relays with some good working ones, that could also be your coolant problem. An over heating engine is far more important than a code 31, imo.

your overheating problem sounds like your fan is not working. When you are moving air is crossing your radiator and cooling off the fluid, but when you're still there's no air moving. Check your fan. If it's not that check your thermostat.

CEL 31 is my freakin CO-PILOT. I have had that bastard on my dash for over 2 years now with no ill effect. I have changed my Purge solenoid and vent solenoid and have had some wack ass machine blow SMOKE through the EVAP system to try and find this leak. In my situation, it is more than likely the roll over valve on top of the gas tank where you cant get to it. When we blew smoke up my cars ass, it was coming out from the top of the gas tank, but I've since checked the fuel pump/gauge sending unit ports and they dont leak. Here's what I CAN tell you about this bitch: *If you reset your CEL, it may take a few days to come back on, it may take a minute, so don't get too excited the first time it vanishes. *If you want to try to replace your solenoids, go to a salvage yard and pull them. Might cost you $10. (Compared to MItsu who wants $197). In fact, I have the original one that was not the problem in my closet right now. You want it? Let me know. *Break down and check your hoses. (I still haven't done it thoroughly enough, but...) BEST OF LUCK! I hope you can get this fixed mang!

seems like the fellas have you covered on your CEL...
as far as you overheating problem... it sounds like your you need to replace your thermostat... make sure you check that your fans are turning on... but odds are that your thermostat just crapped out on you.

pop some coolant in there, see if it overflows or not.
CEL and SRS are my best friends :thumbsup

Yea apparently there was NO coolant in the damn thing at all... I have no idea what the hell the people at the shop did, but they drained the entire friggin coolant reserve, leavin me pretty damn shafted... :nono

My code 31 was due to a cracked vacuum line. If the shop was working in the engine bay, and you didnt have the CEl before, then it may be something as simple as that.

No your not mistaken, I was the one that was... When I got the car back the coolant was gone, but I (personally) never checked it, my friend had (and told me that the thing was fine)... Apparently he had no idea what the hell he was talkin about because there was NOTHING in it at all, and I was drivin like that for 200 miles because I believed him... :rolleyes
Goes to show you that you should do EVERYTHING by yourself to your own car... Oh well, everything is fine atleast...

See. Joe's good for something. But yea...you can let a shop do work for you most of the time. But NEVER take a friends word for something on your care unless hes ASE certified or something. Heard lots of those stories before..."friend said the fluid level was fine 'boom'", ya know?
Glad to hear its working now:)

yeah that happened to me one time, but my resivoir is ALWAYS full. i was like "wtf" cuz i saw my resivoir and it was full but my best friend was like "open up the little cap from the radiator and pop that shit in there" and i did and it took most of the jug i had prepared of prestone & water i was like :o cuz it was *bone dry*, and it happened over the course of a month or so
|
50812, RE: 0wn3d! I REALLY need help... Posted by Joe B Slow, May-09-03 05:58 AM
At Jiffy Lube we check the resovoir, but like ^^^ said, we also take the time to check the actual radiator. I've seen some bone dry radiators before too! Be suprised how low some people let them get, or just dont bother to check! its rediculous.

50843, RE: 0wn3d! I REALLY need help... Posted by DR1665, May-09-03 01:30 PM
If you were to look in my resevoir right now, it would appear that i filled it with butterscotch pudding. It looks like gooey baby shit (so I've heard). That's what happens when Mr. Head Gasket becomes icontinent and can't hold his oil. Ze oil gets into ze coolant and lucky for me I STILL don't run above normal operating temps. My "coolant" gets to about 220 degrees at operating temp, so I don't know if that's normal or not.
Hehe. Leaky head gasket ownz joo! :P

50844, RE: 0wn3d! I REALLY need help... Posted by Joe B Slow, May-09-03 01:44 PM
you sure its an oil coolant mixture? What kinda coolant do you use? Dexcool type or just the conventional green goo?
Dexcool has a tendency to break down and turn into slush, especially with the addition of rust and whatever. Seen a car come in about everything 3 or 4 months just to get a flush cause she cant get the rust out.

50845, RE: 0wn3d! I REALLY need help... Posted by DR1665, May-09-03 03:11 PM
I did a flush and fill the last week of February with good old green Prestone. It's HG man. Denial doesn't do me any good any more... :P

Does it overheat at idol? If it does..(or after a long drive) turn the car off and open the hood, listen to the resivor . Do you hear bubbles? If so... you have a slow leak in your head gasket. Another way of doing this is to get a glass jar (clear) take off your resivor hose from the resivor end and drop it in that jar filled with water, you will be able to see if there is bubbles or not..
