50223, ECU Activate EGT valve after signal line block?
Posted by etx, Apr-30-03 06:35 PM
Ever since i stuck a bolt in my egt sol. I get the error "EGR Insuficent flow detected" of course. Well, i have noticed when i get the CEL for it my car loses its power, just like the egr sol is hooked up like normal. So is my ECU opening my egt valve?! Once i reset the ecu its back to running happy land. Thanks!

What do you mean you stuck a bolt in the solenoid? Just disconnect the vacume line going to it (the long thin one coming off your intake manifold)

I stuck something in the 45 digree bend where the vac line connects to the solenoid. So yeah thats what i did, but its still hooked up to the egt sol but thier is no flow through the line. I really think my ecu is opening my egt valve! :wary

EGR codes come from either #1 you dont have the solenoid electrical connection hooked up, or the solenoid is bad, so you get a EGR system failure

#2 your ECU searches the o2 sensor right after it operates the EGR solenoid looking for a lean condition caused by the EGR system inducing inert gases back into the intake tract which will cause a lean condition.

So basically your car is not allowing the EGR gases back into the intake so your ECU/o2 sensors are not seeing that lean condition and triggering the insufficient EGR flow CEL.

I dont really understand why you put a bolt in one of the vacuum lines like that but you basically stopped EGR flow by blocking vacuum/backpressure from operating the EGR valve so your ECU is not seeing the lean condition and triggering the CEL, its normal, I just slid a plate of aluminum under my EGR valve cause it was leaking and I get the same code as you, I just ignore it, or you can rig up a relay and resistor so that when your EGR solenoid is activated by the ECU the relay is energized and allows the resistor to become part of the o2 sensor circuit and that will lower o2 sensor voltage and trick the ECU into seeing a lean condition (I havent tried this yet but know it will work if the right resistor is chosen)

Yeah i know. But will the ecu open the egr valve if the solonoid does not get a vacume signal? It just seems like when i get that code i loose a lot of power, just like when the egr system was functioning. When i clear the error code my car runs right again! mabye thats why i need to block it off instead of blocking the signal to the sol, mabye the ecu has some kind of failsafe. Anyone had this happen to them?

From what i understand, the ECU will perform a EGR test, normally at cold engine conditions. The ECU will partially close off the IAC valve, and open up the EGR valve. If the EGR is working, the exra air flow from the EGR will compensate for the closed off IAC valve, and all is good. If the EGR is not working properly, or has been blocked off, then the motor will stumble a bit, then trip the CEL for insufficient EGR flow. The ECU will always try and activate the EGR solenoid, hooked up or not. If the actual soleniod has been disconnected, then you will get a CEL for that. If the EGR pipe has been blocked off, then you will eventually get a insuf flow code for that. The EGR is mainly used at cold startup, to help warm the motor faster, and also lower emmisions, and its also used seldomly at part throttle, and WOT to help lower emmissions.

Hrm, It seems like after i check my error codes with the datalogger (to bue sure the egr is the only problem) and reset the ecu my car runs great! then once i get that cel again it runs like crap. x( any ideas?

I just realized I put EGT in the topic and i meant EGR, im retarted..

this is how i have mine set up. it keeps every thing functioning properly but it cant open the actual valve. you still might get a insuficant flow CEL. i have had mine set up like this for over a year now and have only gotten Insuf.flow CEL 2 or 3 times
