My Check engine light came on again... yay...

I checked the oil, and found that it was extremely low... not even showing up on the dipstick... I added nearly 3 quarts... yes... 3... and the engine holds 5! This would explain the 2 bouts of overheating that I got recently.

I also noticed a slight knocking noise coming from under the hood somewhere... only apparent around 1800-2600 rpm. Cylinder #1 looks to be leaking oil as well, there's pretty big dripp-age going on around it.

no visible smoke from exhaust. Haven't done a compression check.. mods- cai, exhaust, that's it.

My guess, potential spun rod bearing... potential blown headgasket.... ticking noise is probably lifter tick from lower oil pressure.


well, any thoughts ? recommendations ?

well, if you didnt already have spun bearings, ill bet you do now. it dosent take very much oil deprevation to spin one...

Well when I had my bout with a spun bearing, I had 56,000 miles on my car and dropped it off at the dealership. They replaced my block and gave it back, hell they even called me and said that the bolt had come out of my rear motor mount, which was probably my fault since I installed the MM inserts, and were like dont worry about it, ill throw a new one in there for ya. I know that is the extreme way of fixing it though because there have been a couple of guys that just replaced the bearings and polished the crank with an emory cloth or something like that, but i dunno.

I spun a bearing and 8 months later i think i've almost got the new engine ready to go. Better belive I'm going to check the oil religiously now! First thing I'd recommend getting after the rebuild/fix is an oil gauge. That light is the dash is worthless.

Is it possible to fix the rod berrings without removing the block from the car?

that's what im' gonna do, change the bearings, and get an oil pressure guage. mine has been knocking now for around eehhh, 70k miles, i'm just trying to keep it alive, once i get a new car then i will spend time and $$$ making it all good (prolly w/new crank)

If you spun a rod bearing, depending on how bad it is, the crank journal will need machining. That means you need to remove the engine and take it all apart. I guess in a very lightly spun bearing, if no meatal was ground off the crank, that just replacing with a new bearing will work, but if its knocking, then its a guessing game until you actually take off the rod cap and check it out. But technically, yes, you can replace the rod bearings with just removeing the oil pan.

bah! Ill just wait till i get my motor done at VT and throw that bad boy in.
