49362, Modern Performance TB. How is it working for everyone? Posted by Dirty, Apr-19-03 06:30 AM
I should recieve mine on monday and would like to have it on before next weekend, but after all the problems people seem to be having with it I'm gonna wait incase I need some downtime.
I just wanted to know what chances I have on getting this thing to work before I take my trip next weekend.

works great, you gotta work on those pesky vac leaks, and, have to mess with the tb, to close right. on mine i got it to open all the way, but if you release it softly it wont shut all the way giving you 3000rpm throttle. i think its like this for everyone. but if you release the throttle hard, then it idles fine.

Someone said in another post, that he added an extra spring to his and it closed like it was supposed to. I don't know what kind of spring they added though cause he didn't reply yet. I just got mine today and I'm gonna start on it soon. I hope this works alright.

hey,
I just put mine one..the basic install was very easy, but I've heard some peopel have trouble with the larger bolts---I didint' try em bare, i used a lubricant from like Pep BOys..it worked fine. THen after the sensor disconnection (which was kinda annoying, but not a big deal) I removed the old TB and then removed the old sensors. Make sure you have a T-20 or 25 (can't remember which) star bit for a screwdriver to get teh old sensors out, and use a socket/ratchet when you can..also don't forget the alcohol to clean the surfaces prior to the gasket install, this will make it much easier in the long run. Furthermore, remove your battery to get better acess to the TB itself...reinstall was a snap, even easier w/2 people "scalpel, check"...and afterwards kinda eyeball the idle posiiton and start up the car, then fine tune with a buddy...all in all it took me about 2.5 hours, but I had to run to the Hardware store to pick up a star bit to fit the old TB and I was working on it in a parking lot at school...
Y'oull be easily able to drive it as is with that install, but when you get tiem, you shoudl fine tune it to get maximum possible opening w/most desireable idle...but just set the idle right first and you can go on a road trip...
matt P.S. sorry so long

Mine is working great, car pulls foward much harder and its made my aemV2 louder (shoosh) Even though my intake port it not bored to match 60mm the added performance still makes it a worth buy that you can actually feel when you install. I would say that throughout my time and money in trying to make my car a little faster, the TB eclipses all other basic mods (Intake, header, afx ecu but not all put together)
Also I did have my share of problems installing the MP TB such as crazy idling, leaks, and CEL's, but after making a new thicker gasket, using silicone, and reseting my ecu, everything was fixed.

Can I get a HELL YEAH!?! I just got back from a testdrive and I'm feeling great. It took me 35 minutes to put it on and it fit right the first time. Nothing ever goes right the first time with my car. I didn't use any silicon, I didn't have any leaks, it idles perfectly, and the throttle plate opens all the way too. It was a take old one off and put new one on and drive away smiling. This was easier than putting on a strutbar. I love this bastard!
The only thing that wasn't perfect was toward the end of my 10 mile drive was the trottle plate wasn't closing all the way. I think this is just the spring not being as stong as the OE springs. It might just need some lube cause it's new. I'll try that first, but if that doesn't do it I'll add another spring. I give it an A+.

>the TB eclipses all other basic mods
Agreed! But WTF!!! The throttle plate is pretty darn close to horizontal because of dremeling the hell outa my half moon cable holder. It has about 1/4 more of travel till its fully horizontal at WOT. Current problem is that the throttle cable adjuster can no longer be adjusted, i used all the travel it would give.
I keep reading replys about "its fully opened". Can some of you post pics of it fully opened?! Yes i have cruise control and yes i've adjusted every area which can be adjusted. t i c k e d off

Note to Modern Performance: Welove your TB's but you have to do something about that spring.

Funny how Modern Performance ppl were fast to post when people were signing up and now they never post on the board anymore, especially when threads about their product and problems show up. That is a bad sign. I wanted to order one, but the lack of response from Modern Performance regarding all these issues is a bit disturbing. -Chris b.

I have an extra stock TB laying around. Would I be able to simply use the spring off of that one? I know it would be a bitch to switch them out, but is it possible? I really want one of these TBs.

I still think this is a great product and I'm not pissed about the spring. I always expect to modify anything I get anyway. I wasn't saying that so people would think these are a waste of money. So far I think it was worth every dime. I was just saying that as feedback. If I remember correctly, these were made for us, because we asked for them. I think they did great work. They shipped it the day I ordered, and I ordered it like 1hour before they close I think. I got it 2 days before I thought I was gonna get it and I think it's quality work. If they make anymore I think since they know now about the spring, they should do something different though.
Also for the people that can't get it fully open and closed by the same adjustment of the cable, the spring will do this for you. I think they made this thing so precise, and since it's aluminum, and aluminum expands is the reason it closed perfectly when cold, but didn't get all the way closed after I drove the shit out of it. If you can find away to hook up a spring I think that will solve your problems. I also think you could use the OE spring but you would have to take the MP TB apart to do it. I didn't like that idea so thats why I used the bracket and an expander spring.
