Well when working on my car, installing the UDP, my friend and I cut off the top part of the cam cover to show the cams? hehe I probably should have asked this question before I did it, but is it ok to show them ugly cams?

Its ok, haven't you seen people with AEM cam gears? If I put those on I am sure gonna have them visable. In theory this leads to shorter timing belt life. The only bad part I can think of is if something were to fall in there. It could shred your belt, or get caught up in the tensioner pulley.

Lots of people do it, can't be that bad.

Yea well I just noticed a few days ago that the timing belt is gettin wear on its side. The side towards the tire not the engine. The only thing that I can think it is rubbing against is down there around the UDP.

Hey Mike... are you sure there's actually wear on the belt? The timing belt will move itself over toward the engine after installation and a little driving.

If you're sure that it IS wear on the belt then pull you timing cover off and inspect the crankshaft timing sprocket to make sure the outer lip isn't chipped (happened to me). I also said fuck you to the entire timing cover so I see everything at all times. My car isn't a daily driver anymore though! ;)

umm.. you mean CAM GEARS.. not cams.. if you took off your CAM cover, that would be VERY bad and you'd have oil shooting everywhere.

but it's called your timing belt cover.. not cam cover or cam gear cover.

did you manage to remove the cover without changing the belt out? if so how did you do it...ive been wanting to do this for a while but im afraid of accidentaly cutting the timing belt. mine rubs a bit when its cold outside. x(

dude, if you are referring to the timing belt cover, there should be no reason for you to cut the belt. You dont have to do anything that could tear or cut it, atleast I don't see how. If I remember correct, there are only like 4 bolts plus the motor mount you need to remove, you can have it done in 2 hours and that's w/ not knowing anything, cuz I did :) haha g'luck..

~oh yeah, I agree, I really hope you meant cam gear cover (timing belt cover) cuz if not you are talkin about your valve cover, and that'd be impossible to do and let your car circulate oil :) but I'm sure you meant timing cover

I dont have any of the timing belt cover on and havent for years... if anything, atleast you can check for leaky seals and stuff easier..

I plan on cuttign a section out of the top when I install the Adj. Cam Gears, to have access to the bolts. But I would recommend leaving the bottom section attached get to prevent any debris from geting in there.

The AEM cam gears wont fit with the cover(at least for me). I don't think it can harm in any way. I had mine cut off since last summer and had no problmes...knock on wood!

the whole cover is a joke. it made my rebuild experence unpleasant, therefore i destroyed it as soon as i got it off. my engine looks a lot cooler without it.
