I see all kinds of different brands with different materials with different bending types. But do they make any difference? Any header would work just as well as the others? EX. 4-2-1, 4-1... Ceramic, stainless, etc... pace setter, obx, greddy... I know its not gonna be a real power gain product, but i sure as hell like the way they look inside the hood. what do you guys think? because i've seen some header that was $500!!! I've also seen some for $150.

pace setter sucks, greddy is too expensive, get an obx

Ceramic coating keeps your underhood temps down.

You get what you pay for.... keep repeating that until you remember it.

Yeah, pacesetter is cheap, but that is because they are crap. I have heard of them literally falling apart. There is also something about them not fitting and having to cut a section out of the flange to fit. If you do decide to get the Paceshitter, at LEAST get the ceramic coated one.

OBX is another relatively cheap header, and from what I can see it looks ok. One disadvantage is that I have heard OBX's customer service and warranty SUCKS. I know of a couple of people that have tried to contact OBX regarding product questions, or warranty stuff and they never respond.

Now I just got myself another Greddy. I know, it's expensive. 390 shipped to be exact. But I knew the Greddy looks nice, it fits correctly, and I liked what the Greddy did for my car the first time around. So its all about what you want, and what you are willing to pay.

Designing a header is a science. If you want one for looks than get whicheveryou like the looks of. I'm a little tired of the whole "headers don't do anything." You don't have to produce peak hp numbers to expand the power band and pick up mid range torque or move the power band higher to match better with whatever cams you are using. I put my header on and felt a difference. It comes down to design, and if you have equal legnth runner you have smoother exhaust flow, ad better scavenging efect, etc. As you improve the ability of your engine to breath and bring more air in. The more needed I feel a header is. You can only bring is as much air as you can get rid of.

I never had a header on so I really don't know. I'm thinking about getting one, because I'm thinking about staying NT for a while.(maybe Nitrous) So, what I've read so far, the way they are pipped really don't matter? Just go with brand names? It's strange that every company with every header has the same description..."max flow" I just thought pipping was the key for exhaust flow. Of course the smoothness too.

Build quality and design is everything (it includes the material used).

A FUCKIN' MEN!!!!

I get tired of trying to defend that fact that I like my car better with a header on. Why do people say they don't do shit? Because that's what they heard from someone else. Thank you Michael!

ok i use to have the crap setter 4 2 1. hated them, i had to cut around the thermostat housing and they looked ugly, it gave nice low end power but 421 designs relitvly stop pulling around 5k, now i put on a HP 4 into 1 design header and holy crap! my motor pulls fuckin hard all the way up to 7k! and i mean hard! and it just so happens HP are inexpensive, i mean u do get what u pay for but remember sometimes therer are companys out there who arnt all intrested in money. some are there to egt there name out as a good product for cheap, but from now on i will onldy do a 4 into 1 design on any of my cars but if i did have the cash greddy i would go but after racing cars and seeing cars run with the greddy they are gettin the same thing as me! same power and times! so i feel i made the right choice!:thumbsup

my greddy header doesn't line up to the ports, but its just by a little. 1 port is right on, 2 are about 1/16" off and one is about 1/8 off. i just ported my head to line up with them though.

I matched up the gasket to my header and it was right on, and the gasket was right on with the head as well. Just got a bad one I guess.

The goal of headers is to make it easier for the engine to push exhaust gases out of the cylinders. During the exhaust stroke, a good way for an engine to lose power is through back pressure. The exhaust valve opens at the beginning of the exhaust stroke, and then the piston pushes the exhaust gases out of the cylinder. If there is any amount of resistance that the piston has to push against to force the exhaust gases out, power is wasted. Using two exhaust valves rather than one improves the flow by making the hole that the exhaust gases travel through larger.

In a normal engine, once the exhaust gases exit the cylinder they end up in the exhaust manifold. In a four-cylinder or eight-cylinder engine, there are four cylinders using the same manifold. From the manifold, the exhaust gases flow into one pipe toward the catalytic converter and the muffler. It turns out that the manifold can be an important source of back pressure because exhaust gases from one cylinder build up pressure in the manifold that affects the next cylinder that uses the manifold.

The idea behind an exhaust header is to eliminate the manifold's back pressure. Instead of a common manifold that all of the cylinders share, each cylinder gets its own exhaust pipe. These pipes come together in a larger pipe called the collector. The individual pipes are cut and bent so that each one is the same length as the others. By making them the same length, it guarantees that each cylinder's exhaust gases arrive in the collector spaced out equally so there is no back pressure generated by the cylinders sharing the collector.

You know... this whole velocity thing is starting to make sense. So why do people claim our engines need a certain amount of backpressure? It seems to me that backpressure is the devil!

my greddy header fit just fine.....no problems bolting it up....would i say that it added a significant amount of power? no, definitly not. Can they be good power adders? Yes in certain instances, although i dont think so on a stock 2 liter.

ive got the greddy. its nice. fitment was great. just remember to retorque the bolts after a few miles and keep a check on 'em. the hardest part was getting the stock exhaust manifold and heat shield off. the stock downpipe is a definite 'piece'. i'd get a new dp too. my car sounds great IMO w/ header,dp, high flow cat, and CAI. you can definitely tell some difference in the car after the install. im not sure on how much because i put my cai, dp, and header on in the same day. it was like driving a new car. ive got some pics of it if you wanna check it out, IM me --> acid23rain

I too have a greddy header (thanks FasterGS) his old one...and I didn't notice sooo much power gain, but the power band is amazing. The car literally pulls hard all the way to 7K where before it was pussing out at like 5500. Stick with name brand, I live by the motto "You get what you pay for" and I haven't had any problems with anything so far.

Oh, and Jason, run your car on just your header, unbolt everything else, and you will see why backpressure is your friend. Is the DP the same on your new header the same or differnet than mine?

48935, RE: Header question
Posted by fasterGS, Apr-12-03 08:13 PM
Its the same, but I was just wondering why the guy above listed downpipe seperate from his greddy header.

And no, I won't be trying the open header thing. Thanks anyway!

Jason, it sounds kind of cool for a while, we opened mine up in my dad's shop, but don't leave it that way...I did that in my truck, and it sounded badass, but it was a gutlass POS.

Cool man! I'm looking into buying one now. Besides the brand, what kind of piping would you guys think is good? 4-2-1, 4-1, or etc. I really don't know how that backpressure thing works with exahust flow. TIA

Backpressure and exhaust gas velocity are two different things. You don't want to get to the point where the xhaust actually starts to back up on itself. Then you are robbing power from the motor. There is a great thread floatign around here (should be in things seen before) about exhaust gas velocity. A good heaer will actuall create a scavanging effect in the exhaust, meaning: as the exhaust gasses from the combustion on one cylinder will be moving fast enough that as they enter the collector that the pressure created will actually help pull the exhaust gasses from another cylinder's combustion along and evacuate the gasses faster.

You want the engine to be able to get rid of the combustion by-products as fast as possible without outflowing the intake, or youwill have fast exhaust gas flowing into slower moving/cooled exhaust gases and this again robs power.

Bottom line... it's never easy.

I have the Pacesetter and I'm going all out saying this(from all my dirty, rotton, horrible things I've said about pacesetter over the years) it does what it was supposed to do. It fit perfect the first time. The only bad thing is that it's fucking nasty looking. So I bought some paint. Problem solved. :)

well I dono if anyones heard of kamikazi (sp?) I decided to get this for our cars cause I know they have a VERY good result with Hondas. Though Im basing on a honda, the power gains are really significant. It flows way better than the HP header I got, and I dont think I wanna fork over 400 beans for a greddy stainless.
Well as I read through the forums, I realize no one has mentioned this brand before. I just put them on about teh begginning of march, so Iv only had them on for about a month. As fas as fitment, it fits like a charm. Looks, it comes in standard black coating, to a chrome finnish. Not that Im endorsing this thing, Just wanna tell peeps theres another brand out there other than Greddy, HP, Pacesetter, and Obx.
In a few weeks I'll give a heads up on hows the thing preforming.
but as of now it pulls harder, and with the addition of my Tanabe G madaleon (sp?) catback, it pulls harder than before.

Me too...it did what it was supposed to do. except: fit right, not blow gaskets, and not rust out after 2 years. i will say it did add some nice bottom end tho.

ill let you guys know how the airmass piece is if it ever comes in. :thumbsup

someone correct me if im wrong but the principle behind headers is like that of a catback. you want to let the engine breathe as easily as possible but not eliminate backpressure. like michael was saying, the scavanging effect is what keeps exhaust pulses pulling eachother out. this is especially important on lower rpm power. That is why 4-2-1 helps lower rpm (more scavanging for lower velocity pulses) and 4-1 helps higher rpm (easier flow for each cylinder for higher velocity pulses). that is also why a larger dyameter exhaust pipe is not always better when buying a catback. if you were to constantly run at high rpm then the ideal exhaust would be none at all (look at most race cars...shortest pipe posible to get gases away from the car) but normal cars do run at lower rpms and therefore need some backpressure.

I bought an ss autocrome for my car and my macanic said its was a quality piece. I love it just like the greddy good welds and stailess 4-1 piping get back at me for more juicy little deatails

One thing about them is... that damn slip fitting. They look nice, but I would not trust that slip fitting not to leak.

I had the same greddy copy with the slip fitting. It didn't fit when I got it but I bought it used. I cut to slits in it and bent it in just a little so it would fit. Then there was the problem with the downpipe. The flex section was too long and it didn't want to all fit right.

Here is a pic of the 4 - 1 section.

Here's the "downpipe"

Here I am playing with my O2 sensor.

This part was kinda impressive

I had to drive with the open header a FEW times due to the bolt holes not lining up on the slip fitting. This is how I had to drive home after the install since we couldn't get the Cat bolts off. It took an exhaust shop 10 or so minutes with a torch to get them loose.

my car still does this, even with stage 3. it just feels like i don't ever have any top end power.
