I am running rich right now and going to the track tomorrow. I just want to make sure running rich isn't going to slow me down. If so couldn't I just put a smaller fuel jet in to make up for it? ;)

Maybe not much help but I do know that higher octane’s or should I say too high of octane can damper performance... How much, probably not a lot... I do know I could feel it when I ran on 94 octane... It may just be me...but im picky about how my cars behaving so I know I felt a difference. Anyways your question... That might hurt but Im not quite sure... It seems likely that it might... But hey running rich well help cool and prevent detonation.

Yes, running rich decreases power output from the engine. How rich, determines how much power is lost. Slightly rich engines wont be very noticable in power loss, while running very rich will bog the motor, and if rich enough, will hessitate, and maybe even backfire out the exaust. "stoichiometric" is what they call normal air fuel ratio for engines to make best gas miliage and power under cruising conditons. Now, when we go wide open throttle, we need a richer air fuel ratio to keep making that power. Usually, leaning out the air fuel ratio will give slight power gains, but is very risky to do, since you run the risk of detonation, overheating, and engine damage. YOu need that extra fuel to help cool things down, and control the flame burn inside the cylinders. Slightly rich is fine, overly rich is bad for power. When its that rich, all the fuel isnt being burned with all the air, and that equals less power.

yes, if you are running richer than the ideal air to fuel ratio your car will not be making ideal power. But it s not something I would worry too much about. You will want to have a more accurate method of fuel control than just changing to a smaller fuel jet.

But XtremeRS, it doesn't matter if your running rich unless the fuel is taking up a measureable amount of space that air could be occupying, because your still burning all the fuel that you could before you rich, you just have extra in the cylider that doesn't get burned (because the lack of air for stoich), right?

Yeah, i see what you are saying, but unfortunately, it doesnt work like that. To make it simple, you need X amount of air parts, to x amout of fuel parts, to make max power out of the mixture when it ignites. So when we have too much x amount of fuel, then the mixture will not ignite and burn with as much power, because there is not enough air to help commplete combustion. Remember, fuel NEEDS air to burn. Fuel will not ignite if there is no air present. Combustion is the byproduct of a fuel and air mixture. When one or the other is in excess, then proper combustion cant be obtained, and power made by the burning mixture will decrease. Hehe, its kinda hard to explain, but hopefully that makes a bit more sense. Think about a house fire, or just fire in general. To put out a fire, you need to deplete its oxygen supply, because fire need air to burn. Get rid of the air(more fuel to air in this case), then the fire gets low or goes out. Light a match and put in in a jar with a lid. The match will go out. Leave the lid off, it keeps burning.
