48708, Terrible gas mileage...someone please help... Posted by NappyEclipse, Apr-09-03 03:13 AM
Hey guys...
I've been getting terrible gas mileage lately and I don't know why. I'm getting under 20 mpg eventhough I drive mostly highway. What can I do to improve my gas mileage? Any input is appreciated...Thanks!

new spark plugs, new wires, oxygen sensor, your cat may be fubar, lots of stuff could be wrong. that's the most obvious stuff i can think of off the top of my head.

have you changed your upstream o2 sensor in the last 2 years or so, and if so did you get a bosch o2 sensor (if so thats your problem)
I typically get right above 20 mpg city driving and around 30 highway.
also run some injector cleaner through and get a can of mopar combustion chamber cleaner and run that through as per instructions on can

Aside from the low mpg are you getting any other symptoms? When my 02 went, I got black dust out the exhaust, studdering, bad idle, popping sounds, car dying out and about 180-200 miles out of a full tank. Replaced it, no problem. Last night, highway, I got 200 miles to 1/2 a tank. :D

Fuel filter is something easy...should be done every 2 yrs or so...in addition to what they were suggesting^^^
How much and how hard to replace O2 sensor?

Most likely a bad O2 sensor. If you can, see if you can borrwo someone's datalogger/pocketlogger and see if the O2 voltage is bouncing up and down at idle and cruising like it should be. If not, then it has gone bad.

Hey,
Thanks for all the responses. To Jasvb TS2K2...I don't have any of those symptons you mentioned. And I don't have that heavy right foot...well not all the time, only when a civic pisses me off...lol. Anyways I'll look into the 02 sensor...I guess thats probably it.

Modification = decline in gas mileage due to heavy right foot
or like others have said check your --- > 1.clean combustion chamber 2.02 sensor 3.check fuel filter/injectors
