4857, Both fans not working Posted by Doug96GS, Jul-09-01 08:59 AM
Driving home from work today my engine temp guage was p 3/4 of the way. I figured that it might be because it sat in the sun all day, but when I popped the hood at idle i noticed that only one of the fans was blowing. It is the passenger's side fan that isn't working. How do I fix?

The other fan only comes on with the AC. it is the cooling fan for the AC condenser.
If you'd like, wire it in with your radiator fan. That way, they'll both come on.

What would be the plusses and minuses of having them both on?

...except using some more electricity, no biggy. You could wire it to a switch inside your car, which might be even better:)

Do you mean to wire a switch inside my car so I could turn the fans on and off manually? I think that that would be awesome. How might I go about doing this?

You need to find a positive power supply form somewhere. If you use the battery you will always have to turn it off manually. You could use the cigar lighter power, but if you are like me there is enough being powered by that. I would use battery power and a signal form somethign that is only on when the car is on and install a relay. You can put the switch in afew places but I suggest on signal wire that turn on the relay, going to be the lowest amperage wire. then run the power from the relay to the positive wire on the fan and tap in. I would leave the wire there so it still turns on with the AC, and you have the option of turning it on other times.

...I think I'm going to do this today or tomorrow:)
BTW Doug96GS, Michael_97RS also showed me how to do some other switches in my car. you might want to hit'em up

:-)
I have a switch panel under my radio to control... lights on my autometer gauges(3), Amp power, Amp Fan(needs rewiring), Radar Detector, Door chime when key is in the ignition and door open, lights when key is in the ignition and door open. I think that's it.
More to come, eventually I'm redoing the whole thing with backlit plexiglass and labels on the switches.

Michael...
I would like to do this, it sounds cool. I like to have as much control over what my car is doing as I possibly can. I am not, however, very knowledgable of circuits and other electric stuff. I don't know what a relay is, or "tapping" or most of the other stuff that you mentioned. I understand the whole thing about finding a power scource that turns off when the car is off so if you forget to turn the fans off you don't drain your battery. If you would mind trying to explain all this stuff a little bit more that would be cool. Also, when would you turn the fan on and off? You would only turn it on when you are sitting with the car running for an extended period of time correct? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm not an electrician :)

Well, I wrote one up for disabling the door chime and light. Here's the link:

Skrilla I know you did this too so if I left anything out let me know, I'll fix it.
Also does anybody have Juan's e-mail? I can't find it. I figured I'd e-mail him the link for the mods page.
