when doing a rebuild is it needed?^^^^... what is its purpose anyways?

I have no clue what it does but my crank from vt is going to be nitride treated.

I believe it's just a strengthening coat making your crank more durable.

it's uneeded since the stock 420a crankshaft can take buttloads of HP.

i have a spare crank which is spun, so if i did hardened it it will help it last longer and hold up to more hp etc?
not to sound like a ass, but correct me if im wrong.. if the stock crank can take a crap load of power etc ( which i know it can ) how come we got cranks with spun bearings? is it just because of not enough oil, or too dirty oil etc?

spun bearings are from poor oiling most of the time. has nothing to do with the 'strength' of the crank.

reason people spin bearings alot of the time is because the oil light doesn't come on until it's so low you've already spun a bearing.. and they didn't check there oil.. now that's the most common reason.

I'm guessing it also happens from overheating and possibly from over-reving? but i'm not sure on those two.

nitriding, depending on what kind of nitriding alloy they use, is a chemical surface hardening treatment that uses a nitrogen atmosphere to diffuse the nitiding alloy into the part being treated. The hardening is a surface hardening, it makes the surface of the part harder, kind of like a hard shell around the crank. This does increase it's durability when it comes to the bearing surfaces, but what you have to remember is when the car is running correctly, the bearings never touch the crank surfaces. the bearings are actually running on a thin layer of oil. The nitriding process does not produce a stronger part, it only increases its surface durability.

Yeah, :( spun a bearing on mine cause i had an oil leak and didn't know it (no oil light... i need to get one of those oil pressure gauges before the rebuild is done). It actually didn't happen till I overrevved (8000-9000 rpms... spinning and didn't realize it). i replaced the rod bearings a few times, but they only lasted a day or so before i had some serious clanging noises again since the crankshaft was out of round (or so i presume)

That's not actually a 420a crank though, that's out of a 4g63. He did this while launching his 90 Talon TSi AWD with 500+ hp at the track last June.

I'm just thinking what that must have sounded like. haven't seen too many things like that before!

Man the 420A crank looks a lot beefier than the 4g63 ones :wary
