4762, Cleaning the head/block for MLS... Posted by Corbin, Jul-08-01 08:48 AM
I'm ready to reassemble my engine, but I can't get the block and head surfaces clean. I used gasket remover and aluminum scrapers to get all the gasket off. Then I used some plastic scrubbers. I still can't get all the gasket residue off. The instructions for my gasket say to use a 3M Roloc bristle disk attached to a drill. I can't find anyone who sells these. What did you guys use to clean the block/head. Here's a picture of what I'm dealing with:

4763, I used several... Posted by Skrilla, Jul-08-01 10:42 AM
...different grit sandpaper and looked over my deck meticulously.None were "rough" but I got several different grain sand paper starting 1st with the rougher stuff to remove thicker parts of the copper(the type of gasket I just pulled) then moving on to the thin grit and making sure not to grind away the deck(so it could be flat). I was confident of my work and I polished it(craftsman polishing wheel on my dremel) when I was done. My local shop used to use sandpaper to do it(back in the day) certainly not the most profesional way but it works and I have no leaks. It was a good refelctive shine(maybe I did too much) but it worked perfectly and saves money. In my area to make the Deck "True" they charge $35, which is the money I saved for a new factory gasket.

BAD THING!!!!! my mechanic said that if that shit gets stuck like that to do what skrilla said. he said to start with 800 or 1000 grit and move on to like 1500 and finish up with 2000 to try and get rid of any scratches...thx to skrilla once again!
