47426, Satan can't figure this out maybe you guys can? rpms stutter and die in 4th 5th gears Posted by Ceres, Mar-24-03 06:37 AM
Ok here is the problem..
Every morning when the car is completely cool been off all
night etc i drive the car 10-15, get on the highway and in the
4th and 5th gears the car starts bogging the rpms drop
dramatically and unless i put it in neutral the rpms go so low
the car shuts off. Then i get off the highway and even the 3rd
gear bogs and stutters and the rpms drop. Now i turn off the
car for 20 minutes and it works fine for 10 then the problem
continues. Satan put brand new wires, a new crank and cam
sensor and the problem still remains. And the bogging and rpm
dropping only happens when in gear (3rd,4th,5th) and when
pressing down on the gas or holding a speed. Is satan stupid?
or what? This has been going on for 2 weeks now and they keep
charging me for replacing things as i listed above but the
problem continues.. ask me any questions you want to help you
better determine the problem.
1999 RS 30,000 original miles
Religiously maintained i.e oil change with synthetic every 3k
miles and recently satan even did throttle body work.
Satan already tried putting a new ecu from another eclipse
which was working fine and the problem persisted so i doubt
its the ecu..

Well my guess is a MAP problem. You mentioned the dealer
messed with the TB, what did they do? The prob may lie in
there too. Cam and crank triggers really don't go bad in
30,000 miles and I'd ask for a refund or at least raise hell
about them charging you for replacing items that still haven't
fixed the problem. If they had half a brain, they would have
took it for a drive with a scanner and figured which sensor
wasn't within ranges.

Aren't you still under warranty?? I would also look at the
ignition coil -- sounds a little like my woahs.... good luck.

warranty, mileage wise, but not time frame 99 is past years
old.
Check the MAP... but also check your cat, sounds clogged heats
up expands and blocks even more flow. Let the car cool down
and some flow can pass back through. best time to check is at
night, sometimes you can actually see the cat glow if it's hot
enough..

I have a mechanical breakdown warranty but drive with a
scanner? How should i word that request because they really
treat me like a piece of doo there also what makes yout think
its the map sensor any way i could explain why i think its the
map sensor(i.e. technical lingo) because shoot down all my
opinions of what the problem might be

Actually the mentioned Cat prob could be more of your prob.
Just get your cat tested by a reputable muffler shop and they
should charge hardly anything. The MAP "may" be
giving fuel cut for some reason and that would describe the
surging your having. Any good tech would definately scan the
car for soft and hard codes anyway before they start replacing
parts. It's hard to tell what the problem is over the net, but
I'm sure that you will get more help here than at most
dealerships.

im thinking pull your plugs and see what they look
like....replace them if need be, and replace your coil pack.

Im gonna be the third to say clogged catalytic convertor.
Those symptoms are exactly what you would experience with a
clogged cat. My friend was having the same problem and she
also had it in the dealer for 1 week, then she asked me and I
told her to tell the mechanic the cat is clogged, so sure
enough she had her car back that day with a new cat running
perfect.

so i tell the mechanic i have a clogged catalytic converter? I
need to know exactly how to word this because they really give
me a hard time there, also what may have caused it to clog?

Is your warranty specific to this dealer?? Go to another
dealer -- mechanics really do not like it when you tell them
what the problem is. But if you are having problems that they
still cannot fix ask to speak to the service manager -- show
him copies (never give them originals) of the receipts for the
work you have already had done -- and tell him that the
problem still exists.

I agree, act retarded. It's thier job to figure it out, even
if you DO know what's wrong. It's easier to figure how hard
they are screwing you. I'd call around and get a few quotes
on getting the cat checked. It used to be free around here,
but I'm sure some places will charge you. Tell them that you
are moving to an emission state and will need the car to pass
smog and want to be sure your cat is in good condition. If
they want to sell you more crapola, tell them to get bent. If
indeed your cat is toast, I got a highflow one I can sell you
for like 25 plus ship. Or, you can take yours off at home and
gut the hell out of it. I have no cat and still to yet get a
secondary O2 code.

"so i tell the mechanic i have a clogged catalytic
converter? I
need to know exactly how to word this because they really
give me a hard time there, also what may have caused it to
clog?"
As for seeing the service manager i might have to if this goes
on and what about the MAP sensor do both need to be
fixed/exchanged? elaborate how this could have happened

Just go in with all the paperwork of items that have been
fixed and tell them / the service manager that the problem
still exists. Why are you even paying for parts then if you
have a mechanical warranty I am thoroughly confused.
You should not be diagnosing the problem -- the service
department should be diagnosing the problem.
Warranties exist so that you do not pay anything out of pocket
-- including diagnosis. They clearly have not properly
diagnosed / solved your problem.
Tell them you want a loaner until your car runs without these
issues -- that way they won't take their sweet time cause you
will have one of their cars.
Just strap on a set and go in and tell them in firm but nice
manner that you are not satisfied with the work that has been
completed. The car still has the same problem as when your
orignially brought it in. I am not sure how much money you
have spent to date -- but that number should be nothing.

I have a warranty but the jerks at satan closed the work order
after they replaced a crank sensor, they are so disorganized i
will definately raise hell if necessary. The problem is the
idiots there drive it when it isn't acting up. You have to
drive the car for 20-30 minutes or 10 minutes highway driving
for something whatever the problem is to heat up and cause the
rpm drops etc

I had the exact same problem on my winter beater (92 Dodge
Shadow). I would leave for work in the morning on the freeway
and after about 10 minutes I would have to get off because it
would just bog down. Mine turned out to be a bad O2 sensor.

Dude you have a clogged cat, go in there and tell the fucking
grease monkeys to change your catalytic convertor. If you
know what it is, and its a clogged cat, go in there and tell
them, and stand there as they fix the cat. Stop being a wuss
:) I tell the mechanics whats wrong all the time with my other
cars, car mechanics are morons (sorry if you are a mechanic,
Im referering to the other 99%)
and If you pay a penny, IM going to hunt YOU down and take all
the rest of your money cause you must like giving it up or
something.
You have a warranty, which covers it.
Stop being a wuss and tell them whats up, and if you have
already paid, tell them you want a refund.
Sorry bad mood, but Im telling the truth
