47327, got my Modern Performance 60 mm tb today Posted by 41eclipse, Mar-22-03 05:45 PM
Anyone else get theirs? I installed it already, all though I am having problems getting it seated fully against the manifold. The first time I tried I was idling at 3K rpm due to the huge leak. Now I have it so it will actually idle normal, but when I hit about 7 psi it starts to leak pretty bad, I'll work on it some more tommorrow. The only thing that I think is wrong with it, is the half moon looking thingy that the throttle cable attaches to(black plastic on stock tb, black aluminum on the 60mm) needs to be designed better, I can not get the throttle to actually open all the way when the gas pedal is on the floor. Before you ask, yes the throttle cable is adjusted correctly. It's a good 20% shy of opening. Besides for that it's a great looking piece that should add some nice performance when I get my problems worked out.

Yeah got mine too. Going to attempt to install it today. I'm not totally sure but aren't we supposed to used some sort of sealer on the gasket to the manifold? anyways i'm n/a so i dunno about the leak thing.
EDIT: "The TBs will be coming with a paper type gasket. We've found on the neon, that the seal is made very strong with a small amount of silicone on each side of the gasket when installing." -David B

I installed mine last night and I'm having a few problems too. When I start the car it jumps up to like 3000rpm and then idles at 1100-1300rpm. Also when I am driving and I come to a stop it jumps up to 2000-2500rpm for a few seconds and then back down to the high idle. As for when WOT...mine does open the butterfly all the way. Any suggestions of what I did wrong??? TIA
EDIT: Could the gasket not being sealed with silicone be causing these problems? What kind of silicone should be used cause all I have is some blue SVT stuff I used for my valve cover gasket.

Netrelik, you have the leak like I did. Clay thanks for the info, I'll have to give the silicone a try. Netrelik, are you sure that you are getting full throttle plate movement? I sure cannot get mine to open all the way using the gas pedal.

Well I was holding the pedal and my friend said it was but I gonna look for myself today. Did you get your idle back down to 800..if so how?

47346, RE: got my Modern Performance 60 mm tb today Posted by CaptinMorgan97, Mar-23-03 05:27 AM
my friend and I put some lubricant on the throttle, and also worked it with some of those lubricant for like 30 mins, it dosent go to 3k RPM as much, but when ever i hit a stop, I give the gas a push and revs up, then cools down to 1100 rpm, it works, but I wanna try to put some silicone on the gasket to see if that helps, aslo I got a CEL, I dono if its the TB or the headers thats giving me the cell, might reinstall the stock to find out,
Also I dono if anyone elses TB dose this, but sometimes the Cresent part of the Thorttle where the thingy meets the idle screw, it sometimes dosent go away, maybe this is the cause of the problem? the butterfly not closing all the way it should? its about 1MM of a diff, where it sometimes stops just b4 the idle scew.

for you guys that are having problems with idling, try also resetting your computer. you probably have to let the computer learn this new mod since you're getting more idle air. that's how i figured out most of my idling problems being this. also use black slicone sealant with the gasket for a tighter seal. it works well for me.

How do you reset the computer? I also thought maybe that the computer needed to adjust to the new throttle but I was unsure on how to go about fixing it.

Just disconnect your battery for 10-15 minutes and that'll reset the comp.. Just like clearing codes.

Well im currently trying out the black silicone and setting the ECU, but has anyone else recived CELs from the TB? I got cells, though first thought it was the HEader, but when I replaced TB, it was def the TB cause the stock didnt throw a cel.
I;ll have a follow up later tonight to see it its a leak.

No cel codes here. Did u reinstall the sensors correctly? Used the "screw on" plug? I do have problems with idle and a sensitive pedal. After some adjustments, Kahn was able to get the idle to 900-1k. Modern-Dave could u please post a write up or tips on adjusting the tb.
EDIT: Also used non-hardening black silicone to seal the gasket. May be starting to have an itch to port the manifold now :-)

Its weird, I got my idle to go to 900 RPM - 1000 RPM which is good, now its the cell thats throwing me off, I put teflon tape around the tapers of the nuts we got, ( the big black allan wrench one) and also around the valve ontop of the TB, I dont see why the teflon is causing to throw a cel, should I clean the Inake mani, cause it is a bit dirty, and yes putting in the silicone does help alot.

Okay... getting the car to idle at 900-1000k was not hard at all -- just played with the throttle adjuster -- placing it directly on the throttle plate stop ... moving it a tiny bit off.. etc... The problem still exists though -- with the gas pedal all the way down -- the throttle plate is not horizontal. Modern Dave... anything else we can adjust?? I took a few pictures... so Clay send me an email and I'll email em to you.
Clay feels the throttle response is much quicker - i haven't a clue cause I never drove his car ahead of time. My car has a ported and polished intake manifold and cylinder head so it already revs quite quickly - when I get back to the East coast -- I will be doing the install on my own car, and will report results.
As far as I could tell on Clay's car a liberal amount of liquid gasket around the throttle body opening has sealed it up quite nicely. I will be buying some gasket material and making my own gasket -- not a huge fan of paper gaskets.
Word to the wise -- the Torx screws for the TPS will not come out without a good amount of force -- we ended up drilling one of them out on Clay's car.
Modern Dave -- as two individuals have now reported not having the throttle plate open up and be horizontal at WOT -- I leave this back to you to explain.
Thanks all.

Well after messing with it for awhile I finally got mine running right! I took the throttle back off cause I realized I put one of the sensor plugs on backwards. After I fixed that I checked to make sure that everything was tightened 100%. I also put some black svt silicone on both sides of the gasket for a good tight seal. Put everything back together and let the computer reset and started her up. The rpms only jumped to the normal 2000rpm on startup and on idle she was purring at 850-900rpm. It took a little practice to get used to the super touchy throttle response, but when I gave it good push she took off!! I also had my girlfriend hold the pedal to the floor and my butterfly is opening 100%. I'm pretty sure that the silicone is a necessity(sp?) for those little paper-like gaskets. I hope that this helps someone with their problems because you will be happy once it's all done. I can't wait to get the Indy manifold now!!

This is going to happen A LOT with the old tb's, I can tell you for sure. same happened with my tb - had to dremel the fool out
as for the idle surge as you stop - same happened to my car in the beginning. In fact I was completely unable to explain why that would happen so I searched 2gnt and found out that this was happening to 2gnters a long time ago with the bored tb's! I don't know why our cars cause the idle to go up when you break - someone said it assists with powering our stops. dunno. it does this anyway with the oem tb's, it's just much more noticable with wider diameter tb's
anyway - my car has stopped doing it. why? dunno. perhaps my car has gotten use to it (don't understand the black box of a computer in the car, can you tell??? :P ) OR it happened after I disconnected my battery last time I was working on my car.

EZ,
Were you able to adjust your throttle cable so that the butterfly is completely horizontal at WOT and the throttle body still closes completely??? Thanks man.
|
47406, RE: got my Modern Performance 60 mm tb today Posted by ez, Mar-23-03 04:30 PM
Kahn - I believe mine was completely horizontal on install on WOT. are you having trouble with the half moon shaped part? tell me if your idle is okay and I'll see if I can help you from there.

47410, RE: got my Modern Performance 60 mm tb today Posted by Kahn, Mar-23-03 05:28 PM
EZ -- not my car -- its clays -- I tried to put the throttle cable as taught as I could while maintaining a correct idle -- and at this setting the throttle plate will not go to horizontal at WOT -- its like a trade off between idling correctly and being horizontal at wide open throttle -- is there some sort of adjustment that can be made to the half moon throttle cable guide???

if you read his post...
he said "We will be making other batches of these units, response has been very good. There are about 10 or so more left right now after the pre-orders shipped. As long as there is a demand, we will work to supply! "

so Im guessing he's still taking orders...

I have a question... It seems like everybody is having a problem. I've been reading other post saying that its not really going to help other than getting a quick throttle response. I was thinking about getting one, but is it worth it? Someday i'll go turbo, but should i wait till then?
|
47605, RE: got my Modern Performance 60 mm tb today Posted by tim97rs, Mar-26-03 07:10 AM
i called them and they are aware of the issue. they told me they will look into it.
my attempt to trouble shoot: looking at it, it looks like the problem might be able to be taken care of by either re-drilling a new cable end hole in the half moon right under the origional one, or be re-drilling the two half moon holding bolt holes. the ones that hold it to the TB. doing it in such a way as to rotate the moon a little more upward and using the throttle cable adj. to dial it in... any thoughts on this idea?
