what might cause the SRS(safety restraint system) light to turn on? Mine came on yesterday and has'nt turned off since. What could be wrong?

Try disconnecting the battery and see if the light goes out and stays out. Probably have to have it checked. Means something is not right in the SRS System.

Had any work been done on the engine prior to the light coming on?

Nope the light just came on. I was on my way to pick up a friend and everything was fine i got there turned off the car and when i turned it back on the SRS light came on and hasnt turned off since.

Sounds like you're gonna have to make a visit to the devil to get your SRS system inspected.
