Last night after some racing my car was acting up. It has been. My battery light has come on and off for some time now. I have checked it, seemed normal. Last night it just felt a little off. The light then comes on steady. I pop the hood and notice shreaded belt, Why? But all seems normal. It's midnight so I can't see. I get gas and drive about 15 miles. When I put my turn signal, the stereo is flickering so I turn off the heater and the system. Then my headlights dim...damn there goes the HID so I am on just the fogs. All lights seem to dim, int/ext. I get about another 10 miles and the car stalls completely. I rest it for 10 min then it starts, I get down the road a mile. So it left me stranded, a mile from my mechanic. This morning I started it and got it to his place. I will have him check it out tomorrow. O.k...is it the alternator belt, is it the alternor, and now is it my battery too? Did the install of the HID a few weeks ago kill it? Anyone. HELP! TIA

J did your battery light light up? No alternator to juice up the battery so guess what? Lights will go dim. It's definitely a juice issue.

sounds to me like the belt started going bad and slipping a little while ago (causing the batt. light to come on sporadically) and finally just "gave up" and shredded. naturally, once the alterntaor stops spinning it stops producing power, so you were just driving off of the battery. throw a new belt on there and see if its all better.

You say it did shread a belt? If it was the alternator belt, then its not charging your battery, which you car was running off of for a while there. Whenever your battery light comes on with the engine running, usually means the alternator is not charging, usually because of 2 things: either the belt is gone, or the alternator is dead. Also check the alternator charge fuse under your fuse box. Its a clear topped fuse, rated at 120 amps.

Thanx guys. I am not sure if this is how it works but if the alternator goes does it shut down and stop running the belt. If this happend then it seizes and the belt just shreads its itself??? :wary
I had thrown the PS belt last summer, but that's on top. That was fine. I looked but I couldn't see the actual alternator belt, I think it sits low but this morning I did see more shreads. I January I had the belts tighten cause they were squeeling. I was told the bolt assembly was changed cause the original was lost, I wonder if caused this issue???:wary

unless the actual gear on the alternator that is spun by the belt has seized up, the alternator will NOT cause the belt to shred. the major cause of alternator falure is due to the degridation of the diodes that prevent a/c current from entering the electrical stream. ive never heard of a 2gnt alternator seizing.

more than likely, the belt itself is to blame. if it was old or was not tightened correctly, it may have been slipping (causing the battery light) and eventually this wore the belt out and caused it to degridate.
