45691, afx udp install help plz
Posted by woo2gnt97, Mar-02-03 05:05 AM
In the process of installing my afx udp atm.

The engine is jacked up and the belts are all off. I just need to get the old pulley off. Its turning out to be quite the bitch. We have a 3 tooth gear puller but the pulley just isn't moving. We even tried putting the torch to it but that didnt really work as the timing belt cover is right behind it and gets burnt easily (plastic).

Any suggestions would be appreciated, asap hehe

Thanks for the reply but thats mostly just info i alrdy know.
The problems lie in steps 6 and 7. When we go to take the pulley off with the gear puller, it DOES NOT budge .. like at all. Its stuck on there good. Been at it for a few hours now and it hasn't moved an inch.

Suggestions?

I haven't found a good way to hold the crank steady on an A/T. With a 5 speed, it is easy to put it in gear and hold the brake. That way, when you turn the puller which turns the crank, it turns the transmission and tries to turn the wheels. When the wheels cannot turn, then the crank doesn't move. Unfortunately, with an A/T, you can't keep it in gear while the car isn't running. Friggin' thing... Try to wedge a screwdriver in there somewhere so that the crank cannot turn, and then use a large breaker bar with a cheater bar or 10 on there to add to your leverage. I couldn't get the pulley on tight with my A/T, though, and had to have a friend with an impact wrench tighten it on. I kept throwing belts because I couldn't put 105 lb/ft on the center bolt while installing.
Best of luck, with that A/T, you need it.
Can I maybe talk you into doing a transmission swap now?

Heh hopefully there will be a transimission swap in my near future, however for now this udp is driving me up the wall.

I wish I could be at the point where I'm having trouble getting the new one on. However, getting the old one off is becoming damn near impossible.

My friend just turned the gear puller to its max and broke off a piece of the hard iron pulley. The pulley still hasn't even budged.

Going to need to torch it, or just break the damn thing off soon. It's getting ridiculous.

Any help or suggestions still welcome plz

I feel ya man. I had the exact same problem with mine. My solution was I took a drill and drilled holes in the center of the pully till it became sooo weak that it just broke off. Took a total of about 30 min to drill the holes. If you do that and then pull on it with the puller in should come off. Hope this helps ya.
