my engine is doing pretty good but it has 175,000 miles on it (bought it like that) and well i just dont think it will have much life in it and im tired of always fearing to slam the pedal down. i dont really know the route to go on things.. i want it to ride like it has 0 miles and to stop burning oil and ticking etc etc. will a good rebuild fix that? or should i buy a new engine? and which co. cuz i hear so many things about diff ones i just want my car to run like its brand new and for me to be able to slam the gas and not have to worry about it blowing up and hopefully being able to grab another 100,000 miles cuz i just bought the car =). any help?

Wow dude, yeah, for all the shit you'd do (especially if you have someone else do it) you might as well just buy a new engine or a low mileage one from a junk yard.

If you can do the work yourself here's what you should do (aside from the machining work)


New head gasket (have a machine shop make sure your head is level, not cracked or warmpet and doesn't need to be decked or replaced)
New valve guides and seals. Hell get a Port & Polish done and a 5 angle valve job while you're at it (if you can afford it)
PT style rockers/lifter lashers
New water pump
New timing belt
New oil pump
New ps/ac and alt belts
New spark plugs/wires
Get your block bored over .020 and get new pistons and rings.
New vacuum hoses
New coolant hoses

Then do all the flushing of the coolant system, clean out your intake manifold extremely well (carbon build up from EGR), block off your EGR system (Ask Dino how he got his CEL to stay off)

I'm sure I'm forgetting something so no one flame me if I left something out. But basically if you have the money to build your engine you can do it how you want. But you could buy a used engine much cheaper. I would suggest building it depending on the direction you want to take (Nos or turbo)

I had the same problem, my engine sucked balls. So I'm going with a Gude Head and a Howell Bottom End. It's pretty much like a brand new engine, I'm going to replace the water pump and little stuff like that to. The head was $1500 and the bottom was like $1200, so I think its cheaper than a new engine because going threw the hassle of gettng a new engine and everything can sometimes run you like $5000 around here. I'm not a expert on engines so dont take it from me because these guys know a lot more but that is what i am doing.

ok thanks. ill probably order a block/head then. i dont really ahve the time to wait for a rebuild anyway its my only car. today i had the timing belt replaced and they broke the tensioner so i cant get my car back for 3 days!! :nono . they are supposed to check my screwed up p/s pump if they dont 'forget' and are replacing my plugs and ive already replaced my other belts. just trying to get everything in good shape before i order a new engine. and im going the HRC turbo way stage 1 then upgrading to stage 2. that will b a lil while from now tho, i just want my engine to be running good now.

but one more q, will the howell or other companies match the reliabilty the stock engine has? cuz this car has pulled 175,000 miles with no known problems what so ever. and the timing belt has only been replaced once before now, they didnt keep good care of it and it still runs fine and has never left me stranded (i drive atleast 80miles to work adn back daily)

go buy a new car?

hehe yea you can rebuild but, im leaning towards ^^ though.

nah i dont want to buy a new car =P. tired of payments. im just going to order a howell 2.0 short block with core. hopefully that should fix me up and along with what i paid for my car it will be around the same as a newer one n i can say ive built this car instead of everything being factory. then all i gotta do is body work adn a lot of it =).

i dont plan on selling it. im buying a new celica in 1 yr probably and plan to garage the eclipse then or just use it as a weekend driver. im planning on spending what is necessary but will prolly go with the howell. the eclipse is the only car i want and ever wanted =). i found one even tho it had a lot of miles and i went for it. i dont like waiting and i had no credit. the car runs fine, i just want peace of mind. and its almost paid for now and since i have no bills and a lot of $$ a new engine wont take me very long nor hurt my income. and the body was in perfect condition until i hit a deer, then wrecked in snow, then my gf's mom backed into it. and the only thing messed up now is a fender is a lil rumpled but can hardly see unless close up but im a perfectionist and want a new one and new paint.

if you got the money then you should just go with the howell. Dont listen to the sell your car thing. If the body is well kept then your fine. y did you guys suggest selling it. Most people going turbo get new or rebuild anyways?
