45337, Found out why my engine is messed up!

I started taking the engine apart today. Then I check how to properly align the camshafts with the crankshaft and I set the crank to top dead center and started looking for those marks. And what do you know its off by a tooth!!! No wonder ever since I've had the car it's never had as much power as a normal 2GNT. Someone goofed up on the timing belt install or it skipped a tooth which I highly doubt. anyway this doesn't look right does it? I think that's why when I tried to dyno my car it did horribly when it got to higher RPM. all because of this :(

Another thing I messed up hehe is the piston. I took out the piston that had 60 psi compression and I noticed a small crach on the ring land. the other pistons still look good, the cylinder walls are good too. Time to drop in those JE pistons :)
kinda hard to see it but its there one small crack.

yeah its not right, you definately need to fix your timing. on the pic of the piston, where is the crack?

haha you can barely see the crack but its that little spec top left from the pin. its really small, apparently small enough to cause big compression loss.

Damn that sucks, whoever did the timing... I wouldn't have do your work again.

yeah whoever did the timing was a complete retard. really sucks that it's been like that all this time. when i did the timing myself (was my first time) i followed the timing belt procedure in the chilton's manual and i had XtreamRS's timing belt procedure printed out as well. they were both pretty good. the first 3-4 times i did it and turned the crank twice to check for timing for some reason the intake cam would always end up retarted 1 tooth. so instead of just doing it by the book i put it back at TDC (not .5 teeth off like the chilton's says) and fooled with the belts and cam gears a little, advanced the intake cam by 1 tooth, and it was textbook aligned, absolutely perfect when i turned it over twice. not believing it worked, i turned it over a few more times and it would perfectly line up each time. i was like "sweet!"

it sounds like you didn't really blow piston ring landings that bad. you're lucky that your cylinder walls aren't all F'd up, 1 of mine was really scraped up. happened with the piston that had a hole in the side. 2 more pistons had cracked ring landings (http://134.88.226.158:443/gallery/NOT%20BACKED%20UP/engine/02-22-03/DSC00012.JP G that's me holding a ring landing) but one of them was fine. the one that was fine had 180 psi of compression. anyways, good luck with the rebuild!

ouch your engine looks like it took more of a beating than mine :P Yeh I don't know who did the timing belt change on my car because I'm the second owner. Haha man now that I look at it it's a bitch to do the timing belt with the engine in the car. With this I kill two birds with one stone :P Its hella hard to check you timing also if its in the car actually you can't really check it perfectly at all if you have the lower cover on. you gotta rotate the crank and hope they line up. thanx for the tip I'll remember that :)

Oh man can't wait to get this thing back together, I'll have regained the power that I shoulda had and MUCH more with the added compression :) wahahaha!!!

if your timming was off by a tooth I think the check engine would come on plus the marks you showed on the cam gears are not the original marks , they are etched inn real hard to see

Ahh yes, the old piston ring land crack :) I bet if you get all the carbon off the piston lands, that you will find another hairline crack about an inch and a half or two, away from the other crack. They always crack a piece out of the land, not just one crack. Pressure gets behind the ringland, and excapes that way. Pic at it a little bit, a piece will most likely fall out. Yeah, i dont know why you didnt get a CEL for a skipped tooth, but its def off. Even if the markes were not that visible, the "609" on each cam gear should be inline with eachother. When Matt_95tgs and I did his timing belt after the last time we had it apart (head was milled, and the thick ass headgasket), the 1/2 tooth thing didnt work either. I have no idea why sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. We then just lined all the marks up, and set the timing belt. Worked great. Good luck with the rebuild :)

Your tensioner maybe bad and the belt skipped a tooth. It probably wasn't like that always.

well I found another crack, its a bigger one. I haven't started cleaning them up but I'm sure there would be hairline cracks and stuff O_0.
