hey everyone. Im starting to actualy mod the stupid slow talon, and i want to build a CAI. I can't seem to find an appropriate sized filter for the end of a custom (probably pvc) pipe except for APC red and blue gross blech from pep boys. any ideas where to get a properly sized K&N filter?

autozone carries a crapload of K&N parts. found one for my 88 camaro, 78 dodgetruck w/ CAI from the factory, and for my talon. they are your best bet, if they dont have it then trty a high performance domestic shop. they have lots of K&N goodies as well.

about how much did all the pvc and elbows + filter cost you?

I think I paid like 15 for all the pipe, elbows, and couplers. Then I paid another $40 for the filter. I am sure you could find a cheaper filter online but I was in a hurry and got it at Autozone.

they were a featured online vendor on the K&N site. Shipping was free and it took about 5 days to get it. So i got a replacement for my old K&N on my AEM CAI for about 28 bucks. pretty cheep.

You're gonna make a CAI out of PVC pipe and you're concerned that the APC filter looks crappy?

when i make stuff.....i make it well. I don't want an apc filter because they have ugly "anodized" shit and they probably dont filter well. THats all. I guarantee my pvc won't look like shit.

I actually used 3" ABS. worked rather well, if I do say so myself.

I got bored today and started playing around with a PVC CAI. I am getting a K&N filter tomorrow from Advance Auto Parts. They actually had the one I needed. The piping is 3" and the filter will fit right on. I took some pics tonight. If it works out I might paint it to match the car and sell my AEM I have. We shall see. Here are some pics...

exactly! whats wrong with that. i assume its all just 3 inch pvc....the gasket on the top is? how are you keeping it in place...

Right now its all just dry fitted. I will be gluing the pvc tonight and the adapter rubber piece thats on the TB will be clamped with hose clamps. It actually was bigger than that when I started. I had to cut about 3/4" off of each side. I will prolly fiberglass and sand it all smooth then paint it to match.

what pieces do you have. a all parts 3" i assume. 90 degree elbow....strait pipe cut to length. the 30 degree bend....more strait.....then whats for the bottom.....? and how big is your filter?

also, i heard the new v2 intake from aem is like 3 inches or what not. doing this saves you 200 bucks again. just fiberglass it and sand it down so it looks like one piece, and it will actually look even nicer.

Yeah thats what I was thinking....it could look really good!!

The bottom piece is another 30 degree elbow. Makes it come out almost completely horizontal. I suppose you could put another 90 on and angle the filter up a bit if you were worried about hydrolock. I will try and get a write up done on it. I just got the filter on. Its alot bigger than the one that came on the AEM. Its like 8" long and goes right by the opening in the bumper. Fills up the space really nice.

what filter is it? ive been trying to find a K&N the proper size but it looks like as with everything else, its time to order online. what filter should i get?

Well mine is just an 8" long conical filter with a very slight taper from about 5" down to 4.5" or so. I can get a part number this evening for you if you would like. It fits very nicely. Tonight I will have to jack up my car and get a pic from the underside.

This morning was the first time I have driven it with the new intake. It definitely has not decreased my power from the AEM. To tell you the truth it almost feels like it has a slightly better pull.(Its probably in my head though)

All in all I am very happy with it. I will be making another one to make all pretty tonight or tomorrow. I will then go ahead and take some pics and measurements for a writeup.

hmmm... interresting, I might do that, but how smooth is it inside? I would think that where the pieces join inside the pipe might cause some turbulance in the air flow... I'm not sure, so don't bitch at me... Or does everything seat flush inside the pipe where all of the edges meet?

The edges all meet really well inside the pipe. Nice and smooth as long as the pipe is cut pretty straight and seated really well inside the elbows.

Fear using PVC on your CAI.. I've read from a few sites not to use PVC.. use ABS plastic because its stronger and more heat resistant.

I don't know how ppl have done with PVC.. maybe its fine and maybe not.. but this is just a heads up and something to think about.
