44543, It's been a while - Can anyone bring me up to date? 420A Perf. Mods. Posted by RS_Guy, Feb-16-03 12:19 PM
Hey guys,
It has been like 1.5years since I screwed around with a 420A.. anyway my sister owns a 420A Avenger, so, being the nice guy that I am ;) I promised to help her mod it.
The mods have to be practically invisible to the naked eye and not affect emissions...
Here's what I am thinking:
- AFX Underdrive Pulley - Larger TB ( Holy Crap, I just heard about 60mm TBs.. but which one to choose?) - Air filter *drop in element*, which one (Greddy still make them?)? - Clutch and Flywheel... which brand?
I figure with these, the car should accelerate *much* better and appear 100% stock..
Ideas? Someone please bring me up to date fast. Any new "miracle" mods that I'm not aware of? Oh and please note that I will have a garage install these mods for her.. I am halfway around the world.

Well, let's see. Probably the biggest news (IMO) has been the 8 injector setup of Corbin's, but unless your sister is going turbo it won't help her much. The usual Intake and Exhaust mods are still good, and NX makes a good nitrous kit. Suspension mods are good AND cheap. If it's a 97 (I think) Howell Automotive has cracked the ECU with some pretty spectacular results. Don't know if it will work in an Avenger/Sebring though.
BTW, I'm still trying to get 'your' motor into the 12's. Very soon... :D

Damn, Greg. That's a good looking car! And yeah, that motor wants 12s, heck 11s that was always the plan :-)
Thanks for the advice, I guess it looks pretty much like conventional mods then. No nitrous, I don't really wanna be responsible for some crazy sh!t she might get up to, just put a little "pep" in her ride.
Gosh, I do miss the 420A days... ----- www.GTuned.com

Where's she at? I've been doing a lot of 420a 'side' work lately, and I'd be glad to help out. As for the 11's, those are coming, but it's been a pretty crappy year money-wise, so I'm not able to do all the stuff I wanted to this year. A set of slicks would get me into the mid 12's, but I want to see how far I can go on street tires. Then I'll add slicks and nitrous, looking for mid-low 11's. That will probably be next summer though. :-( Then I'll probably start looking for an R-33. }(

> Then I'll probably start looking for an R-33. }( :thumbsup Hehehe, naturally, the only way forward from an 11sec 420A...
Greg, she's in Illinois... near Springfield.
BTW, how much boost do you run? Dunno if I'd do it, but that specific 420A :) should be able to handle 28psi... Once again, don't know if I'd risk it though... Everyone reconed that that engine was capable of 10s. My car ran a 13.9 on its old (stock) engine at 10psi with wheelspin all the way. I always wondered what it would run fully tuned on a properly built engine at high boost.
> your skyline? Yes
> in aus? Cyprus, actually.

I've been running 20-25psi at the track, but I've spent soooo much time tuning that the times really haven't shown it. The CR is down to 8.8:1 (plug came apart destroying one of the 9.5:1's). I'm fixing a lot of little things this winter, like wiring stuff and re-doing all the IC piping (too many little leaks). When I'm done I should be able to hold 25-28 psi no problem and that alone should get me well into the 12's. I worked on nothing but driving at the last T&T, and I dropped 3/10ths off my time. :thumbsup I can't wait til we thaw out. I'm already the fastest FWD DSM in the area, now I'm going after the AWD guys. }(

I love it when people comment, without actually having anything to back it up.
It's quite simple really, if you have no timeslip (and proof that it was your timeslip), then in my opinion you run a 16.8 just like a stock GS.

Hey, he's working on it. Bill is building the block right now, and I'm goin up to help plop it in on March 14th. He should be pushing at least 15psi to start....but he's working on it.
As for invisible mods, there are some windage trays availiable on ebay. Also, don't know how far you want to get into it, but cams are invisble when you're looking at the motor. EDIT: Just noticed the emissions thing. As long as you get a mild cam upgrade, it should pass just fine. Something like the bottom rung street grind should pass as well as give a nice jump in performance.

Hey, that's true. It looks pretty damn stock, till you get really close to it right on top - where it says 4.0L. But you could explain that away as a model number or something. Check my sig for the writeup.

If it's a 97, you can get the Howell ECU with an 8200 rpm redline and better ignition and fuel maps.
Also, What's up Guy, Long time no see.

Guy, How have you been?
Why does it need to look stock? We don't have visual inspections in Illinois, and I've never had a problem with bolt-ons passing emissions, with the cams... we'll see.

How well does the ecu work, does anyone have it installed. I want to know if it is worth getting. I want the high rev limiter and i am going turbo within 2 months. I looked on their site and can't find the ecu, do i have to call to find out prices.

Didn't you forget the obvious final gear mod? What about the full throttle body open mod?
