44112, What is broken in my tranny...
Posted by JustOne, Feb-11-03 02:01 PM
Ok I have been having issues w/ my tranny and I just put it back up after looking for the noise it was making. I didn’t do anything to it just opened it up to see if any of the bearings showed any signs of wear. I didn't find anything and I took out my LSD and put back in my stock diff (thought that might be making the noise so I wanted to see) This is the stock diff w/ pin brackets and the PG. It was working great when I took it out.

I know how to install and seal the tranny (done it MANY times before this) so it wasn’t my first attempt.

Anyway,

It started normal and the engine ideled normal. I backed out of the garage and into the street, again everything normal. I put it in first and drove slowly down to the end of the street. I stopped at the sign and put it in neutral to see if everything was good. Everything seamed fine so I put it into first to turn and all the sudden you hear a GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR (gears grinding) I quickly put it in neutral and the noise goes away. I try first again and it makes the same noise. I can put it in gear but when I lift the clutch pedal that is when the gears grind. It did it in all gears even reverse so I shut it down. I didn’t just let it grind I let off as soon as it made the noise, I just wanted to see if it was any other gears. Well I couldn’t drive it back so I pushed it all the way back to my house (in neutral) once I got it back in the garage I tried it again. This time it goes into gear (all of them) and when I let off the clutch it engages like it should BUT the car doesn’t move. The Speedo even reads the speed but nothing else happens, no grinding, wining, clunking or anything. So the car goes into its gears and the ecu reads load like it was in gear but the axles don’t turn (new axles by the way)

What do you think is broken in it? The diff is turning obviously because the car is reading its speed. The shifter forks should be ok because it goes into gear?

I guess I will get to take it down again.....

Fun.

Brian

What happens when you leave it in neutral and let off the clutch?

it it rolls like its under power, or stalls out, you may have seized a gear.

It just sits there as if nothing is wrong.

It's like it's on a dyno but the wheels dont move.???

Any other ideas? The tranny worked fine a week ago other than a rubbing sound (like a bearing)

i just noticed the other day that when i let my clutch out and i'm in neutral the car seems to move forward a bit. i still have that sound (off and on and sounds like a bearing). i'm bringing my car back to the shop friday. i think my problem might be similar to what's being posted for.

going into 2nd it grinds. clutch out it makes bad sound. clutch in it goes away (unless i'm in gear, 1 or 2 and rolling). clutch out while moving it makes it. it goes away after a while, but if i rev it it will make the sound again.

i just had it rebuilt too! what could it be?

The one difference is that my car doesn’t move at all (in gear or out, clutch in or out)

Something is defiantly broken inside the tranny. I think it is on or more of the spider gears?

Find out for sure tomorrow…

Just a thought... If you didnt get one of your axles pushed in all the way then it might do what you are describing. Does the PG diff lock when there isnt a load. If it doesnt, then all the power will be transfered to the axle that isn't pushed in all the way and you will just sit there.

*Edit - I guess you probably would have noticed some tranny fluid leaking if this were the case.

My tranny was getting fuct up worst and worst over a week or so, and it didnt start "pulling" in neutral till the last day or 2, then I knew it was fuct, so keep your eyes and ears open, mine made a nice grinding(not really nice:-) ) the last 2 days or so in neutral as well when i'd get infornt of the car and listen to it, along with it starting to go into gear harder and hard and the obvious(tranny fluid had metallic flake and was totally black like motor oil.

This may sound stupid but check that your axels are fully engaged into the tranny. It happened when i helped swap a clutch in a friends civic. The car drove fine for a bit then one of the shafts popped out and the car wouldnt move (it didnt leak any fluid either). Just a suggestion.

The axles can go an inch into the NV-T350 trans and still engage the diff... they just won't seal the transaxle.

If it goes into all the gears fine with the engine off, it's likely not the trans. If shifting with the motor off is difficult, or it just won't go into a gear, it could be internal to the unit. If it shifts fine while not running, but won't shift at all while at idle, it could be your clutch or clutch hydralics.

Did you put the bolts back in the flexplate?

Flex plate? I don’t need no stink'n flex plate. :)

I have the Clutch Masters aluminum flywheel and the neon non mod stage 3.

Well today I lift it up and see a axle clamp on the floor by the passenger wheel. So I stick my head under and see a boot all the way off. (new axle by the way) So I’m like shits broke anyway and start it up w/ the car in the air. I put it into first and take my foot of the pedal and the drivers wheel turns but not the passenger. I roll under the car and the passenger axle is turning but the wheel isn’t. So the joint on the tire side was totally ripped up. Not bad for only first gear. I took the axle back to the shop and got a new one. Now the car works...for the time being anyway. I am so shaky when it comes to driving it because every time I get the tranny up and think I am done something else starts to make noise.

Thanks for all the pointers fellas!!!!!

Same shit happened to me while I was in Dallas. Feel lucky you were at home. :)
