43865, bad seals..............................fucked engine Posted by chrysler kid, Feb-07-03 02:17 PM
took my car to the mechanic today, she's been leakin about a quart of oil a week on the ground. The mechanic tells me ive blown about every seal on the engine, and his shop doesnt have the experience to fix it. He gave me the number for a engine specialist and said good luck. This totally fucks up what i was gonna do to this car. Its not worth shit now, even with the kit. damn im fucked

Head gaskets are serious shit. They can pressurize an oil system well beyond what the gaskets and seals can take. Also can damage the cylinder head itself if burn through happens (if the head gasket rupturs between two cylinders and the flame front burns its way to the other sylinder). Hope for the best, though. An upper gasket kit isn't too expensive, though. Hopefully, the necessary machinework is minimal. I would start by replacing all of the seals and gaskets in the head, though, and work from there. Front and rear main seals can be a bit annoying, but if they are already blown, no worries on harming them. Replace everything. If in doubt, replace it. Oil consumption does not agree with these motors, as a loss in oil pressure will usually result in at least one spun rod bearing, which is an annoying fix. IM me if you have any further questions. -=B-=

Dude take that engine out, replace all the main and cam seals and head gaskets and tell that mech to go fuck himself for not being able to do a simple job. I'm sorry man, I just hate it when so called mechanics don't know how to fix an engine.

OMG that is exactly what he said i needed, how much will that run me to fix? he said i have other leaks too but im not really sure what else could leak

I can't believe he can be a mechanic and not know how to fix that! My father owns a garage, so I grew up around cars. I recently bought an eclipse just like that with a "blown" motor for $500. I spent $400 on it to get it running again. Just take the motor out and replace the seals and gaskets like he said. (I also replaced the pistons on mine) A head gasket is time consuming to replace, but its not that big of a job.

He very well may be able to do the repair...he just may not want to. Some types of work are more profitable than others and he may not want to invest the time for an engine overhaul when he can get more quick cash for other types of work.

I can't believe I'm going to actually move a post from the Pits to the Engine/Performance section. :rolleyes

if u want to pay full retail for the gaskets sets they are liek 180$ for the topend and like 45$ or so for the bottom end...
at forum dodge they are like 35$ for the bottom end and 84$ or sumtin for the topend,
now if u have any spare cash might throw in some new internals if u can swing it

Find a friend who can take out the engine for you and I'm sure any of us here can walk you through the process. Hell we may even walk you through the process of taking the engine out if you can get a lift.

is it your oil pump?

i dont think its my oil pump, it still runs, but smells like burning oil. I will see if i can swing some new internals, i guess my car will be lue and silver for a while

do0D! I so feel your pain. I have been losing oil like a sunuvabitch for a couple months now. If you can scrounge up 2 grand, you can do a sweet little rebuild. Actually, for even less than that! Motofool has the bottom end kit for $1100! I got a PT Cruiser clutch, complete upper gasket set (hg, et al), and a timing belt for $360 shipped. If you wanted to keep your stock internals, and just pull it apart and put it back together, you could surely do it for under $1500. Best of luck to you! :thumbsup

Fixing the seals really isnt that bad, a month or so after I bought my car, my rubber gaskets blew also and I was leaking 2 quarts in 30-60 mins.
I would say if you have the resources to do it yourself, then go for it, otherwise take it to a shop. Most shops though will charge you crazy prices not for the gaskets but for the labor of taking out the motor. I had a friend of mine do it for me and charged me 150 for the whole ordeal, Also it is recommended you change the timing belt if you got any oil on that, just a suggestion.
Good luck man, -Cody
