Well here are the symptoms…

In gear (any gear) I can hear a kind of ticking noise. It isn’t very loud and isn’t all that much of a tick more of a dull thud noise but not loud. Kind of sounds like it’s a deep exhaust noise at idle (bummm, bummm, bummm, bummm) It I only get it in gear giving it the gas. If I take my foot off the gas the noise isn’t noticeable. It may still be there but I can’t hear it. It doesn’t make the noise in neutral or just rolling. Only when in gear and giving it gas.

Here is what is new so you know what it probably isn’t:

Clutch – ClutchMasters Stage 3 non-modular
Flywheel – ClutchMasters Aluminum
TO bearing – ClutchMasters
----All torque to spec-----

Tranny gear side:
Junk yard 20K miles out of a ’99 neon
Bell housing side stock but new input shaft bearing, output shaft bearing.

Every bearing is (should be good) I have put about 3000 miles on the new/used tranny and it didn’t have this problem when I put it in.

Any ideas? I can’t for the life of me figure this one out. I have replaced about everything I can and the problem is still there.

Does it speed up when you accelerate or does it go bump in the night at any speed?

It gets louder (not really louder but more noticable in higher speed) In idle there is nothing at all. Only in gear while driving. I also get a slight shimmy in the stearing wheel. Im thinking its the tranny still!!!!!!!!!!! I hate that fucking thing!

It could be that one of your inner CV joints is going bad.

Start by checking your lug nuts, You may be surprised. Thats the only thing that I can think of that would clunk and make the steering shitty. Not visually either, get out the wrench. Other then that check the exhaust manifold make sure it's not loose, broken bolts, or any black soot on the head where you may have blown out the gasket. This would have no effect on the steering wheel though.

When the CV goes bad doesn’t it click real loud and all the time (costing and giving it the gas)?



The bearings in the back of the tranny (sitting bell housing to the sky) are sealed bearings so they would take a lot to break. The other bearings are new and installed right. I have no clue what it is. I took the tranny out again (4th time) and opened it up and I still can't see any signs of anything wrong. The bearings of the diff are fine and roll freely, the others look fine too as do the seats that they ride on.



What does the rear main sound like when it goes??? Or is starting to go???

Rar main does make any noise, it just starts to leak oil.

There's always a tried and true method to diagnose these kinds of issues - beat the crap out of the car. See what breaks. If nothing breaks, there's nothing wrong.

^^^ Funny. I agree with metaljim, my CV axle went last month. I didnt have any clicks or pops, just one clunk, and then vibration under acceleration.

Does it only make noise when you have the gear engaged? Or does it make noise just when you shift into the gear with the clutch in? If it's making noise with the clutch in -then it's probably something with your tranny. If its only making noise with the gear engaged - a worn inner CV joint will cause noise on accelleration, decelleration, or accelleration AND decelleration.

It only makes the noise in gear and only when I give it the gas. It doesn't make noise w/ the clutch pedel pushed in. It doesnt make any noise (that I can hear) in neutral.

It isnt a real loud noise. Feels/sounds like a bad bearing but isn't as loud as when my output shaft bearing went out. I guess I will try the axles???? I hate it when you cant pin-point problems!

I had the same symptoms when my inner CV joint went. It was audible enough that I could tell that it was the passenger side axle that needed replacing. Is the sound louder on one side or the other? Its doubtfull that both went bad simultaneously. Its probably only one axle that needs replacing. If it's too hard to tell from within the car, maybe you can have a friend help and do some low speed drivebys under accelleration.

Well I am going to try putting on new axles. I can’t see any signs of anything bad in the tranny. I already have a life time warranty on them so it would be dumb to not try it. I wish all my parts on my car were life time warranty!

I've got this tranny drop crap down. I can get the tranny off and apart in an hour an a half.

Well, my method of checking joints is to go to an empty parking lot and (this will sound stupid) put it in reverse and crank the wheel and make a circle. Go one way then the other. If your noise gets louder or more distinctive then you'll know. Also before pulling out a shaft, grab hold of the bastard and shake it in and out. See how much play is in there. Those CV's get loose after awhile when they are worn or broken.
