43377, My car wont stay running Posted by Therein10, Feb-02-03 04:16 PM
I have a 1996 eagle talon ESi with the Star Stage 2 Turbo kit.
My problem is, is that I can start my car and begin driving,
and just completely randomly my car will die on me. After it
dies, I cant start it because it has lost all spark and I
usually will end up towing it. It finally got so bad that I
cant even drive down the block without it dieing on me. So far
my mechanic and I have redone all after market wiring,
replaced the cam censor, crank sensor, coil pack, and ECU, and
plug wires, and so far nothing has worked and I still cant
drive my car. If anyone knows or has any ideas on whats going
on, I could use all the help I can get.

No I didnt try replacing anything to do with the fuel system
only because we know for sure that I am Losing spark.

Didn't someone post that they found out that their car was
randomly dieing because their ecu was bad? or the connections
to their ecu were loose or something like that. I can't seem
to find it.I swear I remember that.
Hey turbo guys. what is it like when your map sensor sees
boost and cuts out? is it something like this?

ASD relay?
IAC motor
So youve tried to crank it after this happens and checked to
see if there was spark by touching to spark plug to the
motor??
And your not getting any CEL's???
I think its your ECU (even though you said you changed it I
think you put another bad one in or there is a serious wiring
problem ie. bad contacts etc..
If your car is dying and not setting off any CEL's youve got a
serious problem.
Could also be a dead alternator, Ive had WEIRD problems when
my alternator died on me, it would start to buck a bit, lights
would flash on and off and then it would just die and I
couldnt get it started again until it I jumped it.
Try jumping it when it dies and see what happens??

the thread about the bad ECUs were only occuring in 95s.
MIne's was bad, TrishaTalon's went bad and I think
Mr.LocalPimp had a thread about his. I haven't heard anyone
with a 96 posting a thread about replacing theirs yet.
hope u figure it out....electrical drama is terrible ;(

Well as soon as I start crancking over the motor a cel does
turn on but we tried to read it and it said that there was no
communication from the ECU. I also have an msd dis-2 and a
S-AFC. Maybe should I disconnect both? and what about my fuel
cut defencer, I was actually told I shouldnt even have one,
but it came with the Star Stage 2 kit? Has anyone had any
problems with a S-AFC killing their car?

try using the key toggle to check the codes. without starting
the car turn the key ON off ON(i beleive) and wait a few. the
CEL should go trough a series of blinks. count each series of
blinks, a pause denotes a seperation in codes. all codes are
double digit so you link each group of 2 together. it should
end with 5 5 meaning code 55(end of codes).

what have you tried already? have you tried jumping it with a
known good battery? have you installed a new battery? if you
jump it with a good battery what happens? if you've recently
installed a battery is it in correctly? are the cables on the
correct terminals? when my car had a battery put in with the
cables backwards it would start for a few than die off. the
laternator fuse would constantly blow out, even when bridged
with a paper clip.

It cant be a battery or alternator problem because all the
electronics will remain on, the only thing that is lost is the
spark.
By the way what is the ASD Relay?

I just replaced the ASD relay last night and my car is still
dieing on me. Could it be the VSS or the EGR? Im way lost and
tired of spending all this money for nothing

43670, RE: My car wont stay running Posted by Patroklai, Feb-05-03 02:45 PM
if the VSS is the problem it would die on the following
conditions:
a) deacceleration while in gear (no throttle)
b) braking
c) depressing clutch pedal
then, RPM will drop fast until 0RPM and engine dies.
*usually it will not start until you place ingition in off,
the start it again.
if this is your case, then its your VSS, if not
scratch it out as a possible option.:P

Turns out it was the EGR Tube that heated through my wiring
harness and melted the cam sensor wires together. Thanks for
all the help!:thumbsup
