Hey guys, I need to rebuild my motor, and need some advice on what I should do, how much it will cost, etc... I have seen lots of posts about the 2.4L swap, and I'm wondering if this is a feasable thing for me to do since I basically need a new motor anyway. What I need help with is like a list of a couple of possible things I could do to get the car up and running again (with as much power as possible). After this rebuild I dont think I will be going turbo for a looong time if ever at all. Should I look for a cheap 2.4L block, rebuild it and do the swap, or just rebuild my current block? Is there anyway I can get the stroker kit without buying the entire 2.2L block from Howell? Let me know what you guys think and if possible give me some scenarios of how much I'm looking to pay for getting this stuff done.. Thanks in advance.

Ben

i beleive the 2.2 from howell isn't stroked it's just bored out.

if your planning on staying without a turbo than you want the biggest motor you can get. the 2.4 is 20% larger than our stock motor so in V8 speak that would like going from a 350ci motor to a 420ci motor. the 2.4 does have a longer stroke than our stock motor so i would say you could consider it a stroker upgrade. just remember doing the swap involve taking the entire motor from the 2.4 minus cylinder head and up. meaning you can't use the same block. you need the 2.4 block with guts.

i'm currently in the same position you are and from what i've read doing the "swap" is basically a bolt on affair as far as putting it in the car. there's one engine mount on the passenger side of the car that won't fit with the 2.4 block so you would need some custom fab work for that to fit but that mount isn't necessary to use just a really good idea as not using could allow your motor to shake it self to peices. there's a few other things that need to be done for the swap but nothing seems all that complicated.

I just talked to a guy at a shop I was thinking of having the work done at. I mentioned the Howell short block to him and he said that I could get the 2.0 short block installed for about $2900-$3200 (including the cost of the block) and he would also do the new timing belt and some other maintenance stuff as well. He will also install a new clutch with no labor charge and do a UDP as well. Does this seem like a pretty decent deal? The cost of rebuilding seemed to be just as high after all is said and done. Let me know what you guys think...

Oh I was also wondering how much shipping was for the short block... Does anyone have any idea how much it would cost to have the block shipped out here to CO? Let me know! Thanks,

Ben

Ekk sounds like you are in a tought situation... Me living in Cali, I wouldn't even think about the motor swap. SMOG would kill you.
If you arn't doing the work yourself, I probibly wouldn't do the 2.4, after the motor is in (where the shop stops) there is still going to be things you are going to have to adjust. They will just do the swap, and then make you pay when it isn't running right.
I talked to Howell a while back, and they wouldn't just sell the stroker crank.
The Howell 2.2 includes a 40 over bore and the stroker crank.
I think your best deal, if you are going to stay all motor, and have a shop do the work is going to be to get it bored over a bit, use a stronger higher compression piston, then do some head work, like look into some beter cams, polish and port it, get bigger valves stronger springs to handle higher RPM and a higher quality lifter/followers (whatever you want to call the lifters we have).

We all need to find somewhere to get the stroker crank for our motor without going thru Howell, unless they will sell it seperatly, then I will buy one :)

Well where I was getting at, you are going to need to acess your situation a little more, how much you wanna spend on this? How long do you want it to last?
Best bang for your buck is probibly a rebuild and head work...
Best bang for your luck is a built motor with a nice big turbo....

My other option is to get one of the rpmextreme blocks for about $400 less than the howell one... Does anyone know anything about these ones, the quality or anything? They seem to use the same parts as the Howell block... http://rpmxtreme.homestead.com/blocksdodge.html

i bought a junkyard 1997 COMPLETE shortblock(well, minus pulleys and all that stuff) for 100 bucks. it had pistons, rods, crank, oilpan. i got the Wiseco/Eagle combo from RaceEngineering( i went 10.5 this time) and got the complete engine gasket kit from our dodge dealer for 300 bucks. so i basically got a brand new shortblock for about 1k. no there were of course machine shop costs for the .020 overbore, crank polishing, balancing etc... but my dad is a retired machinst, so igot the hook up there... :-)
