42665, Bad idle is good, hehe Posted by steve0677, Jan-24-03 12:54 PM
I see somebody else just had cams upgraded today also... I just got back my car form the shop with my crower 2 cams installed, and damn they are nice. My car pulls mad all the way through. I think havin these with the afx ecu is the best move I have made staying NA. The car does idle bad and I stalled the thing like 3 times at first, but its all worth it. The car also sounds awsome, I need to find my way to a dyno to have some numbers show what im feelin. I did loose a little low end but not much at all, the cams kick in at like 2500. }(

Does it make your car sound like it is cammed like the v8's or does it make our cars just sound like they are running poorly?

i know my crane cams do sound a little cammed, i can hear them in the exhaust at idle and a little whirring in the engine....at WOT at like 6k rpms it sounds very very agressive and very good....although i didn't have the bad idle...it actually idles better then the stock cams...

Man you gotta get some times on that, I'm curious as to what the ecu and cams do for the NA's

Damn I want an ECU. Give it some time to learn and adjust your fuel curve. It will stop stalling/trying to die on you.

Did you do the cam install yourself? I was thinking of getting some nitrous cams, and I was wondering the cost of install, or if you did it yourself what was the difficulity like?

Yeah its a good cammed sound at idle and it kinda stands out. Also the tone of the engine at idle is nothing like it was before the cams. When accelerating the engine sounds a little deeper, then when u hit like 6k rpms its roaring.
"Damn I want an ECU. Give it some time to learn and adjust your fuel curve. It will stop stalling/trying to die on you." The stalling was all my fault hehe, i did it 3 times in row pulling out the shop not giving it enough gas. Car hasn't stalled on its own.
All the bolt-ons I have on my car only gave me so much power, I boast about ecu and cams because they made the base power much stronger, making my bolt ons work much better. Heck even adding cams probaly made my ecu give out more. I also think having a cat-back was another important mod for cams. The results are more than what I expected so im very happy.

If you haven't already, P&P the intake manifold runners and the upper intake manifold. This will really help open the top end even more. When I P&P the manifold after installing the drag grinds I had, the ease of hitting the 7200 rev limit was amazing. There was no question that the 420A would be a high RPM screamer with an ECU on it. I would say have your next mods be the top end so you can enjoy the raised rev limit. Has anyone with the ECU found out what the rev limit is yet? I would have on day 1! }( }( }( }( }( }( }(

PP is next and I really like what your tellin me about the results. The afx ecu rev limiter is supposedly 8300, I'm affraid to go over like 7200 with the cams and ecu its so temping though cuz it does get there pretty fast.

GEt some Pt Rockers and lifters and some good valvesprings and you are set for 8200.

I have the upgraded valve springs, and I talked some people about the lifters and rockers and kept hearing that even if they were in the engine it would still be unbalanced so it's still risky to go over 7k rpms, I forget what the exact definition of unbalanaced engine meant. I know lots of people will beg-to-differ on this topic, even if there is a controversy that was enough to make me stay under 7000 to be on the safe side.

Yeah my exhaust is choking my cams right now, so I can't wait to fix it.
There really isn't anything to balance up there, it's not a large rotating mass that you need to worry about. I'm upgrading to Mopar Perf lifters and better rockers with my head gasket. The only thing I would worry about now is going to be stock springs and retainers with the high lift cams. But if the head is built I won't even think twice. Even on stock stuff I would still run her up to 8k+ on occassion }(

OK, I understand what needs to be done to the head to really withstand the punishment of high rpm operation, but can the engine internalls hang as well, or do would i need to rebuild to make lots of trips of to 7800 or 8200.

I didnt see Cam gears in the mods in your sig. get those, and you will get even more from your cams.

The neon guys have been spinning the stock bottom end to over 8000 rpms for years now. Once the top end is upgraded, your pretty safe for higher rpms. If your still worried, do some asking over at neons.org, the neons have had the AFX computer for 3 or more years.

i shoulda got the rockers and lifters either way x(

42916, RE: Bad idle is good, hehe Posted by WIKKI, Jan-27-03 03:35 PM
I don't think that the lifters are much of a reliability issue. I think that it is more of a performance issue (ie. the pt lifters pump up better to open the valves more at higher rpms). the springs and rockers however are questionable at those rpms IMHO.
can you say "VALVE FLOAT"

Where can I find this ECU at? I'm starting to question going turbo for now, and just getting cams, an ECU, and working on the top end. What do u guys think I should do?

Afx ecu and cams is a mean setup, my car moves like I never thought it would. Your 96 so you might be waiting a while for that ecu, howell supposedly is making them for 98s and 99s now. Only way to find out is to call and see what the update on possibly getting 96's. Another thing you can check is the neon boards and see how they like there afx ecu's and cams setup.

WIKKI, the rocker arm replacement IS a reliability issue, not performance. I have a pic of my broken rockers that I can post for you after the 1st of the month and my site comes back up. I had stock rockers on drag regrinds and I broke 2 of them. They are known for breaking due to a faulty design.
