42041, Speed question
Posted by omerc10696, Jan-18-03 02:24 PM
I used the search and I looked manually throught the "Things we've seen before" section, and didn't find an answer to my question. If there is a post with the answer I apologive ahead of time, and ask that you link me there. Thank you. Anyway, whenever I go to and from work I'm usually doing 90 - 95. Sometimes when I get out late (11PM) I floor it and try to see what I top out at, the highways around here in NYC aren't really straightaways (especially the one I take) and they're usually never empty there's always a group of cars going down the HW no matter what time it is, so I usually reach about 100 or 101 and then I have to slow down because of a turn or because there are cars in front of me, well anyway last night when coming home I found my perfect oportunity, I was at least 1/2 before this short straightaway and it was empty, so I decide to see how fast I can go before having to slow down. I was doing about 90 before I decided to floor it, well I floor it and it speeds up I'm like alright here we go, then .... I'm like WTF }( it doesn't feel like I'm goign anywhere, I look at the Speedo it stopped at 102 and the tach stopped at 4000RPM. Well the thing is I know I can go faster than that because 1. I saw on a couple of other post of people going 130 - 150 and also a couple of years ago I was racing a friend of mine and I swear I did 120 but I was so scared that I was doing 120 in a 55 zone that I'm not really sure if I imagined it. Well (sorry for the long story), I guess my question is if I did hit 120 that time why is it that my car stopped at 102 last night. I don't think I did anything different, both times I had the OD on, both times I was flooring it, the only differences are now I have H rated tires, and I was a little low on gas, also I just had my oil changed a week ago but that's it. Oh, BTW I have a stock '95 RS the only mod is an after market intake I got from a friend for $10.

drugs are bad... speed is bad for you, don't know what to tell you, did you take your foot off the brake? i've only gone about 100, but i got freaked out, that and i still haven't had my recall done.

it's cause your an ATX.. most can't go above 102ish because the OD kicks on and it just sits there without enough power to go faster, turn your OD OFF until you get to about 110mph and then kick it back on and you'll be able to go a bit faster. but i don't recommend doing this as speed kills and shiz.

yea, you need to keep your OD off untill about 110-120 or you wont make enough power to go faster. on a more technical aspect, we have one of the lowest coeffecien of drag (.29) but theres a point when the wind resistance prevents you from going faster. when that happens, it means its time for more mods. the more mods you get, the more power you make, and it allows you to overcome the resistance and you go faster. our cars are capable of 160-170mph but the only prob you have is getting enough power to overcome the wind resistance. and be carefull doin triple digits on a busy highway, i cant think of anywhere in a big city that would be safe. if i ever did it, it was at night on a deserted country road where there was no chance of me killing anyone else but me.

thats whats nice about New Mexico. long empty roads. all you need is a radar detector and you can run your car as fast as it can go for as long as you want.

Thanks for the help guys, I'm going to try it this Thursday if the highway is empty enough. As far as speed goes, I can't help it I'm addicted, and it also doesn't help that they're usually playing some hot techno beats around the time I get out of work :-) . Too bad there's no SAA (Speed Addicts Anonymous) :-) . Anyway thanks again for your help.

look man, not trying to be a dick, but doin 100+mph in a city as big as NYC is wreckless and stupid. its one thing if your killed doin stupid stuff like that, but its quite another if you kill other innocent persons becaues you lost control or something effed up on your car. if you wanna go out and test your top speed, go to a track, or top speed contest, or go way out on some secluded road. dont do stuff like that on the highway. every time some irresponsible import racer goes out and kills someone doing stuff like that it gives us a bad rep and it devistates that persons family. fast cars are like a gun. it can be fun, but with that fun it must be used the the correct manner, and responsibility comes with that also. and i know, your the best driver in the world, and you drive 95 all the time, but im asking you, slow down and take it to a track. the highways arent out there for you to test your speed. your gonna kill you or somebody else doing so. and screw all that livin on the edge, puttin everyone elses life in danger cuz im gonna be mr macho and go fast everywhere i can. and yea, were all a lil addcted to speed, but techno music or not...it dosent mash that accelerator down for you. if it directly stirs some impulse to your foot, just turn the stuff off. im askin you real nice to be responsible...and im sure youll take this the wrong way but oh well.

yah the only thing you can kill on country roads is your self alright. i quit racing country roads, too many deers. ive hit one going 80 on a run and almost hit one at 100 something. those deer just have a habit of loving to get hit by cars expecially if you got money into it. ima start spot lighting i guess and taking them all down before i do a run in the area :). ive been around 90-100 in races in a city before. it really depends on traffic at the time and how good of a driver you are. ive never even came close and ive done a lot of stuff in my years (being like 4 yrs :)). im just a natural though i guess and i love it. i wouldnt do it though through a lot of traffic. ppl like drunk drivers piss me off and id be no different from one of them if i done something wreckless like that. my speeding and races have been very controlled, well as much as could be going those speeds. but i do what i want to do and listen to no one else nor care for my own safety but i do care for my car's safety now. odd huh. but yah top ive got my car is close to 140 on a country road :). completely stock for the most part too. huge wing, so im sure that limits me some.

I understand you completely. I should've clarified earlier, I usually do 90 - 95 on my way to and from work cause I usually go in early in the morning when there's barely any cars on the road, and the days I speed when coming out of work I go in the afternoon and get out around 10PM or later, and there are few cars on the highway and I always make sure I'm on an empty lane and I'm at a distance from the group of cars before I floor it. The times when I go into or get of out work in the afternoon I always go at tops 70 which is keeping up with traffic. Those days that I try to test out my top speed I get out of work at 11PM and I'm usually on the highway around midnight and it's pretty much empty. See I live in the city (Queens) but I work in Long Island so when I get out it's empty around the Long Island area but as I get closer to the city that's when I slow down cause that's were the cars are at. Trust me I'm careful 99% of the time, cause I know how it feels to get into a highspeed accident on the highway. Two years ago, I was out with a couple of friends in my friends Galant and he was doing about 95+ well it was the middle of the day and there were a bunch of cars out, he was cutting in and out of traffic, we wound up on the slow lane just as a van was getting off the onramp and onto the highway, well my friend swerved to avoid hitting the van and luckily we didn't hit anyone but we did lose control and slam into the side rails at about 90 MPH, I'm still experiancing back pain and knee pain from the accident. So yea I am careful to only speed when there are few cars on the road. Thanks for your concern though :thumbsup .

i reached 135 pretty easily, on the highway late at night, its safe to test your top speed as long as theres no cars in your way, my only fear was cops.

intake, 2.5 exhaust w/gst muffler, pacesetter header, msd wires, ngk plugs, port and polish throttlebody, front and rear strut bars, 1.5' tenzo springs, 17" primax rims, kuhmo tires, leather interior, gsx sideskirts, BM shortshifter, GM fluid in trans...

Well I won't be speeding anymore for a while, I got pulled over this morning on the highway for doing 81 in a 50, gotta pay $90 and I'll be getting 8 points on my license :( . It's bull though cause according to the ticket it says that if you're caught going up to 30 MPH over the limit you just mail in a $90 fine. If you go 31+ you have to go to a hearing and you get 8 points on your license. Damn if only I had gone 1 MPH slower x( . FYI this is my first ticket ever since getting my license 3 years ago at age 16, not bad I guess I knew I'd be getting one sooner or later. Hopefully the last (well ... for another 3 years at least, hopefully more). BTW, anyone from NYC know any race tracks nearby? The only one me and my friends know of is in English Town, NJ and that's about a 4 hour drive from my house.

^^^ heh, sorry to hear that, my dad got pulled over for the same thing 31 over. 86 in a 55. had to go to court to get the ticket dropped and ended up getting the ticked and going to traffic school... i laughed at him, but that's cause i went to the same class a couple of years ago to get my "failure to reduce speed/accident" ticket off my record. damn stereo's and cars stopping in front of you.

i need something better than H rated tires or else i'd go out onto a straight flat country road where you NEVER see any animals (mainly deer) and test that motha out, but my car is mad at me right now.

sorry bud, but i kinda knew that was gonna happen. well $90 aint bad for 30mph over. hell, i was gonna be fined 110 here in texas for 24 over. oh well...its all fun untill you get pulled over and realize you literally cant afford to drive that fast.

ive posted this many times and people give different answers...but im auto and i can only hit 110mph and then my fuel actucally cuts on. Now people say their arent governors on our cars....but i got a talon i dont know it that makes a diff. or if the state you are in makes a diff. but for the life of me i cant get past 110

That's funny... When I still had my permit and my dad took my car out to test my new rims under high speeds, he was able to hit 120 easily and he could have kept going, but he slowed down. He was in a 45 zone. And he had the OD ON. Maybe different year eclipses act differently????

****By the way, I have a 98 GS

either that or the rims affected your speedo
