Hey guys, I'm starting to burn about a quart of oil every 3000 miles. While not a huge problem, I'd rather catch this now then later. Its started to lose oil about 65K and is now a 85K. I bought the my car with 27K on it, switched to Mobil 1 and never had a problem. No oil leaks from the car, except a small valve cover leak. It's still pulls down 34MPG consistantly. I haven't noticed any smoke from the muffler or anything. Any suggestions on how it's happening and how to stop it?

all cars burn oil, even new ones, 1 quart isnt alot for 3 thousand miles, dont worry bro, ur 2gnt is being normal, is ur headgasket leaking at all? our car do that round 60k,so technicly u might be loosing it from there and ur car may not be burnign that much!, i use to use mobil 1 synthetic till after i got my HG done, my mechanic said its a waste and pure sythetic eats up seals and gaskets, thats y i do half and half, valvoline dura tech or whatever its called. but anyway ur fine bro

were you talking about valvoline synthetic blend? yeah, i use that, i'ts ok. depending on how much, and where i drive (to) i go through about a quart every 1-3k miles my HG is probably non-existant now.

for fucks sake.. you guys still think a car burning oil is 'normal' and 'ok'?!?! jeezus. any 4-stroke gas piston motor should not burn oil unless something is wrong/leaking, whether it be the rings, valve guide seals, HG, whatever. it should not burn oil. none of my vehicles have ever needed to have oil added to them unless i drained it out to change it. including my 97' 420a powered breeze, with 90K miles on it!

if you are needing to add oil between changes something is wrong, no whether it's some defect that happens in many 420a's or not is besides the point, it's not a good thing, but not neccesarly a bad thing either.


sorry if the opening to this post was a little harsh, but we've had this discussion before and nobody seems to listen to me that it's not what a normal gas powered 4-stroke motor should do.

Its normal and OK. I was listening to the G gordon liddey show and they have a car expert on every so night, and people always call up saying their cars burn oil. The only real worry-some burning, according the the expert, is a quart within 400 miles. A thousand miles is nothing at all to worry about. I think youre ok. Doesnt seem normal, but I trust the experts.

my car goes dry about every 2 weeks. and thats not many miles in between either. but hell, 170,000 mile engine, i expect that =). still hasnt missed one beat though. just a thirsty lil engine.

hehe hell yeah :). i need a new engine, thats killing my $$ for mods and i cant do it till my car is payed off anyway (3 more months). then ill get a new one but i wish i could buy a body kit or atleast a conversion instead of an engine. i bought my car with the intentions to rebuild every piece of it, kinda regret that now i shouldve got one with a good engine atleast :) but im stubborn

I've got 115k, and up until like 5k miles ago(HG started leaking), I never lost any oil at all. This is the original engine.
To better explain it. Between oil changes up until 110,000 miles, I never added any oil between changes. The level has always stayed the same. My compression is 190,180,190,180..which i feel lucky to have this good of numbers at 115k.
I have heard that you are supposed to lose a quart every 3k, but that really doesn't sound right.

Ive been posting on here for almost two years and yes it is normal for a 420a to burn oil. My eclipse has done this since it has 20,000mi on it so dont worry. P.S. I am a mechanic.

Thanks everybody, but I'm pretty sure Breezio is right. Under no circumstances is a car supposed to burn oil under normal driving conditions. I can see if it is excessive heat or cold or racing or anything could do it. But my car is burning oil consistantly now. Yes, it's only a quart but does a quart go to 2 quarts and then 3 quarts. There is no head gasket leak, so i imagine it's getting by the rings. Everybody seems to have oil burning problems with their 420A, but that still does not make it normal.

mine has 108k and it's 5k past it's oil change. I lose a qt every 3000 miles myself.

i change my oil about every 6k miles, with a higher mileage car, an oil change at every 3k miles, isnt really that necessary, unless you wana do it that way.

I think your backwards, bud. A new car it isn't necessary, but for maybe every 5-6k miles. A old, high mileage car should be changed a little more frequently, at every 3k miles.

I go dry in three to four weeks. But, I can't really see any signs of oil leak. After three weeks, I can barely see any oil on the dip-stick. Am I leaking or is it burning three quarts every month?

I've got 117k on mine and it burns about 2 qts. between changes. Lately I've been adding that Lucas Oil Additive and it's been burning less.

yours is doing the same thing mine is coppereclipse. i have a 95 rs too. its burning that much oil =). i know cuz i can smell mine so can everyone else when im idle and so forth. i have to put a qt or two in it every week and im getting tired of doing that i think im just going to let it bite the dust and buy a new engine. i have 170,000 on it tho.
