41809, Overheating again
Posted by pn0ymahal, Jan-16-03 09:01 AM
well about 2 weeks ago at idle my car overheated in my garage i was just tuning the fuel a bit. so most of my coolant came out, so i just added water then. well now on my way home from school was revvin it up etc etc doing some boosted runs, nothing extreme. but i was on a hill going up and i notice my coolant gauge was a bit higher, so i turned on my heater, and it went back to normal. well i was just going 20-30mph since i was near my house then i step on it for a bit and turned off the heater since i saw a cute girl hehe.. well then when i was a few mins from my home my gauge started to go up, then i turned on the heater on my street since my gauge was rising more. then i let it idle for a bit, open the hood, and the tank this time was not boilling. but when i turned off the car, a few second later my tank started to boil for like 5-10seconds and stop. and the fluid is at the top of the tank but did not flow out... i did a compression test two weeks ago when it happen and my #s were ok. a friend said, i migiht have air in the system to cause that last time, but it came back.
any advice guys? do i just got to drain and fill it again and put some of the water wetter? or would it make a difference to flush it all out? i got 44,000 miles now about.
thanks

yeah drain it refill with the water wetter/water/coolant mix

and replace your rad. cap, they have been known to fail and not pressurize the system correctly causing overheating.

sounds good. ill do that. my bud jamesman before told me about using the gst radiator cap, would that make any difference for me? or should i go buy a gs cap?...
thanks

Id just get the regualr cap, I dont know what the benefits of the GST cap would be, its probably the same one..who knows

Similar thing happened to my car a long time ago. i flushed it all out real good, used some water wetter, and replaced the radiator cap. now the temp wont rise no matter how hard i beat on it.

i don't think a GST radiator cap would be a good thing. the RS/GS caps are rated at 14-18 psi. the GST/GSX is rated at 11-15 psi.

sorry sir you are mistaken, the RS/GS cap is a 13 lb cap and the GST GSX cap is a 16 lb cap. the more pressure that you build in your radiator the more efficient your radiator becomes because as you increase the pressure the vapor pressure of the coolant becomes higher therefore not allowing the coolant/water to boil. the direct opposite is like when you boil water at high altitude it boils faster than at sea level. the gst radiator cap will increase the efficiency of the radiator, but it won't make the car cooler, unless your stock cap is broken and leaking.

hey james, well i forgot some of the info you told me about the gst cap. it was odd when i went to pep boys today, i looked in the book and for the 99 eclipse it only has one part # for the cap, the 13pound kind, for both 420a and 4g63 engine? then i asked to check hmmm 97 and it uses a 16 pound cap for the 4g63?.. i comfirmed this with the computer at pep boys, oh well.. well i drain and refilled my coolant. so by using the gst 16 pound radiator cap it wont lower my temp, but prevent it from boilin over like my stock gs radiator cap? if so i will use the gst cap i got it in my garage...
thanks guys

oh man.. ok i drain, and refill the coolant with water, and some anti, also put in 1 bottle of water wetter crap. ok so i decide let me warm up my car and tune my tunes for the radio.. ok so i do that. then say, hmmm let me rev it up a bit since it looks ok.. so i rev it up once i get pass 3000rpm my coolant gauge starts to go down ( towards cool) so im like wtf.. i let off the gas and it goes back to normal on the gauge. i do it a few times, and it does the same thing. most rpm i went up to was 5000rpm in park.. so i let off and let it just idle, and my gauge starts to go up more again, so i shut it off. and look at my tank and its boiling again... =(.. its full again...
well im unsure whats wrong now.. hey james you free sometime this weekend to take a looky for a while?
call me
thanks guys

so when you revved the engine, the temp got cooler? id make sure your water pump/timing belt is ok.

"so when you revved the engine, the temp got cooler? id make sure your water pump/timing belt is ok."
well from my stock coolant temp gauge, YES, but once i let go off the gas from holding 3000rpm and on the pointer goes back in the middle?
i forgot to mention in my previous post above this one, that i put a new 420a aftermarket radiator cap on, i believe its made by Stan. im going to put my stock radiator cap on tommorow and hook up my ob2 program to see what my coolant temp is at.. if i change the thermostat would that be something to look into?...
if i got to check the water pump dont i got to remove timing belt etc? its in that area?
if so ..hehe ...James i might need your help when your free to see whats going on.
thanks for the inputs

I'm sorry, stupid question. but is your fan coming on?
41884, RE: Overheating again
Posted by pn0ymahal, Jan-17-03 04:11 AM
you know what i 'think' it came on. but im going to put my stock cap back on and warm it up to see what my ob2 coolant temp is at on it, and if my fans come on.. if the fans dont come on what could it be?
also i just thought about this, could and if my coolant temp sensor is bad could it cause the problem i got? and if so what steps should i go by to test it? i forgot
thanks

this is with the stock gs radiator cap but with new coolant etc. start it up, let it warm up ( no revving ... ok now the gauge pointer is in the middle. i look on my ob2 program and my temp starts out at 50, then goes up to 80 and mostly stay at 90, then the last few mins before the pointer starts to go up more and with some revving it goes up to 95 most. i revved it up about 3times around 3300rpm and thats when the pointers goes down towards cold but as soon as i let go it goes back to where it was?... also within 10 mins of being warm no fans turned on. so i decided to turn on my ac and both fans comes on, and when i turn it off the fans shut off. so i wait another 10 mins and still no fans turn on? and now my temp starts to rise getting pretty hot, and when i turn off my car my coolant tank is boilling again, but this time it overflows, i saw some coolant on the alternator belt area and ground but i think its from the overflow. looked at the timing belt where you check to see if timing is correct, and i did not see a grip of fluid. since my fans dont turn on whats the mean ?
thanks

mike check your thermostat and see if it is opening.
also when your car is cold, take the radiator cap off and start the car look into the cap hole and see if there is fluid flowing, moving through there. have you changed your thermostat yet? if not i would change that also. when you are looking into the radiator cap hole and the car is on, the flow of coolant should begin really really slow then gradually flow faster as the thermostat warms up. if there is very little flow then then waterpump is what is causing your problems. if the flow does not change then your thermostat is bad.
i will probably be working on my car saturday and kaiser is goig to come over on sunday, so either day will be cool if you want to come by. just give me a call.

41962, overheating fixed, but gauge is no good now?
Posted by pn0ymahal, Jan-17-03 04:56 PM
well after i talk with jamesman and my uncle to confirm that the thermo did not open, i went to buy a new one. just put it in because i have been busy all day. dame i think i spent more time trying to remove the gasket on both ends then the drain, and fill and doing a oil change and tune up.. the old gasket was on it like super glue+ hehe.. but yah, let it warm up for 15mins no overheating, so i brought it on a main road and boosted it up to 9psi and 5000rpm about and it did not overheat. but anytime i went over 4,000rpm my pointer on my coolant gauge would go DOWN ( colder ) but if i let off the gas it goes back to normal? what should i look into fixing this problem? jamesman told me it could be the sensor at the housing? its the big sensor right? if thats it, then its easy..
any advice is welcome.
oh yah my ob2 labtop said, my temp for coolant was 205 when i got home after 9psi pulls. thats about right in my book...
thanks

Your gauge problem is almost surely an electrical one. id replace the temp sensor, just to be sure. it shouldnt go down when you push the gas FARTHER down... probably a minor problem anyways. goodluck with it.

im going to try and see if my bud james can see it tommorow, i might just buy both the coolant temp gauge unit connector and sensor connector. depends how much it is ..
