41629, Why can't I chirp second? Posted by extreme97nt, Jan-14-03 01:50 AM
I have been reading of people being able to chirp second with just a CAI. I have a star stage 2 at 7psi and I still can not chirp second gear. By the way I have a 97 5 speed with stock 16 inch rims and goodyear eagle hp's fairly new. I was thinking it migh be the clutch but it seems to be ok. Any other thoughts? Just want to find where the extra power has gone. Also my car is very sluggish if I punch it until the rpm's hit about 3k. Then the boost kicks in! :thumbsup Thanks for lookin.

16" tires? Sticky tires? bad driver? I can chirp them sometimes even in my automatic after the final drive mod.
If you stick just learn to dump that clutch faster and hit the gas harder, I guess its just in driving skills.

41631, RE: Why can't I chirp second? Posted by fasterGS, Jan-14-03 02:15 AM
I could chirp second when the car was stock. It all depends on your shifting technique. With my underdrive pulley and cold air intake I can "spin" second too.

41632, RE: Why can't I chirp second? Posted by extreme97nt, Jan-14-03 02:20 AM
I shift fairly agressively, I guess I just dont want to destroy my clutch. I have been driving stick for over 2 years now so I think I know what I am doing. I was thinking something more along the lines of something being wrong with my car. Is any one else running eagle hp tires? maybe they are just stickey. But anyways, thanks for your opinions.

41633, RE: Why can't I chirp second? Posted by Justin99RS, Jan-14-03 03:10 AM
your clutch probably is destroyed...most likely the reason you can't grab....i have yokohama W rated tires, way way stickier than HP's and can spin 2nd gear when i'm on it hard
|
41634, RE: Why can't I chirp second? Posted by FnNitWit81, Jan-14-03 03:27 AM
Just keep your foot on the gas even when you hit the clutch and change gears with gas mashed and pop out the clutch.

41635, RE: Why can't I chirp second? Posted by randy, Jan-14-03 04:52 AM
It could be turbo lag. What size exhaust are you using? Check for boost leak. I could barely peel out also with my star....
|
41636, RE: Why can't I chirp second? Posted by The1Bill, Jan-14-03 05:03 AM
Is it possible that you are chirping 2nd gear but not hearing it? I had a set of tyres that were so silent that I could spin them badly, and not even know it (without looking at the tach). Just something to consider... -=B-=

41637, RE: Why can't I chirp second? Posted by a_miller_76, Jan-14-03 05:14 AM
Yeah, look at my mods...as close to stock as you can get with something resembling a mod. I can chirp mine pretty good.
|
41638, RE: Why can't I chirp second? Posted by ClipseRST, Jan-14-03 05:23 AM
I could fully stock as well.... Are you running on stock rims... If not, the weight of the rim is probably too much. And why do you really want to chirp going into second????... If your cars running good all it means is that you got great hookup, right? It could be worse, you could wheel hop going into second like my first 95 did.
|
41639, RE: Why can't I chirp second? Posted by Mystic511, Jan-14-03 05:52 AM
I chirp second when I shift exactly at 7200 rpms and have a super super fast shift.

lol
On the actual topic, I chirped second when i was learning to drive a standard. I didn't really mean to, especially since i was right beside some houses, and it was 2 in the morning. Then my friend told me that was better than his when he was trying.

80945, RE: Why can't I chirp second? Posted by chopedtobits, Sep-23-04 05:42 PM
I think it may just be the driver. i got a 96 RS AND i could chirp that thing any time i wanted to stock. ive gotten so damn good with that car i can keep em spinin in 3rd gear even. so its gotta either be ur car is major fuckin up or u cant drive worth shit. oh yeah i can chirp em just cruizin at like 40mph just push the clutch in and rev up to the redline and pop that fuckin clutch.
|
41640, RE: Why can't I chirp second? Posted by Eagle 5, Jan-14-03 09:36 AM
i did that one night. i took off and i spun my wheels up to about 6800 and never heard anything more than the slipping sound, like something was sliding. not chirping or squealing. i think it was cuz the tires were cold and the gorund was barely wet. sounded kind of cool though.. also in my stock 14" tires i have spun them and the only reason i knew they were spinning was cuz i was giving gas and not really doing much.

41641, RE: Why can't I chirp second? Posted by DJTJ, Jan-14-03 05:54 AM
Hey man the reason why you cant chirp in second is probably b/c of the fact you not reving your engine before dumping the clutch. In a lot of turbo cars in order to get the best performance out of them is to double clutch. if you dont know what it is (you may) but take off in 1st then push in the clutch put into neutral, rev the engine to about 4200 rpms and then push in the clutch and put it into second. That way you turbo spools up and also you dont get the lag from the turbo. Thats what i think your car is a little sluggish like you said. either that or you need to up your fuel system.(pump, filter, lines, etc.) any more questions ask me.

Im not out to beat the shit out of my car trying to chirp gears. However, I figured due to the fact that bone stockers can, something must be wrong. That was the point of my post. Im not out to try to destroy my clutch or hold the pedal down between shifts,(I like my car running) So it is possible my clutch is shot, boost leak, or??? Does any one else have Ideas??? thanks Paul

Oh boy is right, someone's been watching too much F&F. First of all, you have no time to double clutch when you're racing and even if you did it would slow you down horribly. Second, you are building most of your boost at higher rpms so you'd have more than enough power when shifting into second if you shifted at even 6 grand. I bet it's either your clutch or shifting technique.

41647, RE: Why can't I chirp second? Posted by ner947, Jan-15-03 01:18 AM
the only time i ever double clutch is when i'm downshifting/toe-heeling around a corner, or if i want to scare people with my blow off valve }>. double-clutching makes the gears go in like butter which is better for the transmission, but it slows down shifts. i've never double clutched while drag racing, takes too much time. auto-x is a different story though.
does double clutching really keep the turbo spooled? i guess you wouldn't know unless someone was able to find a way to measure the RPM's of a turboshaft... a neat idea for a gauge. it would be cool to have a tachometer that goes up to like 90,000 rpm's or whatever your average turbo rotates at.
with star stage 2, you should be able to spin in 2nd EASILY. it's my guess that you're clutch is starting to go, or you're not slamming 2nd fast enough. i could spin them fairly easily with hahn stage 1, but now with stage 2 it's a joke - i need to get a phantom grip.
i spun 5th gear once, but that was dumping in the clutch at about 4500 rpm's on a parking lot covered in ice. it was wicked cool!

41648, RE: Why can't I chirp second? Posted by Eagle 5, Jan-14-03 09:33 AM
i chirped second in my car when it was completely stock. just when you shift you dont let the clutch out slowly,. push clutch in and let off of the gas most of the way but not all, shift, then slam the gas pedal as you dump the clutch again. you want to chirp second? dump your clutch when shifting, i have no problem chirping second when i want to, i usully do so i know im getting as much power ot the wheels as possible.
|
41649, RE: Why can't I chirp second? Posted by XtremeRS, Jan-14-03 09:43 AM
I could chirp the first to second shift when i was stock with the 14's all the time, esp when making a turn. But still i could do it going straight. You say you dont feel much power until about 3000 rpm's?? well thats just about right with a turbo. I can start to spool at 2500 rmps, and hit a pound of boost maybe, but the boost really doesnt kick in until 3000 and up. Do this. Run out your first gear at WOT to about 6000 or so rpms, then shift QUICK to second, and put the gas to the floor. Dont keep your foot on the gas while you shift, just do it very quickly from clutch to gas. As soon as you get into second gear, floor it for a split second before you dump out the clutch. If you end first gear at 6000 or so rpm's, you will end up with good boost and your rpms will be around 4500-5000 so you will make enough power to eigher spin the tires or chirp them depending on how sticky they are.

41650, RE: Why can't I chirp second? Posted by DeanoD, Jan-14-03 10:35 AM
It is your clutch. Just before I changed my stock clutch, I could not even get the tires to break loose in second. I know how to drive.
The clutch is still holding for stock power, when you add boost it slips a lot and then finally grabs. Not enough clamping force on a worn disc. My stock clutch had 65K with over 10K of that on boost. I put in an aftermarket clutch and I can chirp/smoke the tires in 3rd if I wanted to.....which I do not usually do.
BTW: my clutch still felt fine under vacuum driving. No problems at all. I did notice that when I would launch, I could feel the car not pulling near as hard as it should be. I could also start in 2nd gear and it still grabbed fine.
Buy an aftermarket!

I am auto and I can chirp 2nd. In right conditions. (yes, dry ones) I can spin them some in 2nd with TQ steer. I am trying 3rd now. It got it today, but I don't wanna keep doing that b/c I can tell the tranny prolly doesn't like it. It hits rev limit like twice, bouncing off, then a 3rd time, but shifts instead of bouncing off the limiter. Kinda weird making the auto do this. Of course nobody will believe it, but nobody has been with me when I do this. Except for friends sometimes. It's all practice.

Deanod, what clutch did you put in, where did you get it from, and how much did it cost. You seem to be the only one who thinks I can drive ;). I can not wait to get a new clutch now :thumbsup Also thank you to everyone who has helped with ideas. I am thinking with the 120,000 miles on my stock clutch its life is now over. The motor is still fresh though. Just did a comp test 210 215 215 210. That made me happy!!

41653, RE: Why can't I chirp second? Posted by HRT, Jan-14-03 01:25 PM
My two cents Im saying its also your clutch because it seems(by the posts) that you should be able to chirp second with the proper technique wether or not you have a turbo... Im not turbo'd either but I can get a decent chirp in 2nd... Just make sure to hit it and quit it as fast as possible, b/c if you dont theres no way you'll chirp..... Replace your clutch

Hey DJTJ,
Flaming isn't allowed. I really don't care if you post about double clutching to your heart's content, but if you start calling people names, not only are you pissing off posters, you're breaking Forum policy regarding flaming. So give it a rest.
BTW, welcome to the forum. :rolleyes

i think it all depends on the way you shift. it is different for every person, i have gotten rubber in second plenty of times, and i was still stock. just mess around with it, you'll get it -redbryo

I chirp 2nd every time I race it hard.
If I'm crising along in second at about 25mph or so(3000 RPM), I can clutch-in, rev it all the way up and dump the clutch to peel out. But I guess peeling out is a little different then chirping. Can you at least make 2nd gear peel out?

well I have an auto gs with the same eagles you have and heavy chrome rims. at the track this last friday I kinda barked the tires off the line just by brake launching. Then when the car shifted into second it chirped the tires. It feels really weak when i have an exhaust leak ( star stage 2) or when I had a boost leak,... only way I found out I had a boos leak is becuase the wastegate tube had blown off causeing the turbo to spool so high that it blew the elbow off the turbo. so check these things out first.

I noticed that no one has mentioned possibly bad spark plugs or wires. I had a problem with my car being sluggish in the lower RPM ranges as well. Could barely chirp first. I changed the plugs and wires and the problem was solved. The only mod I have is my K&N filter. Just my .02, but you might want to check it out!

41662, RE: Why can't I chirp second? Posted by HiOnPSI, Jan-15-03 02:05 AM
Strange. Back when my car was bare-assed stock i could chirp second, just like everyone else. it wasn't that hard, either. Now that i'm running 10psi, i can spin first, spin second, and spin 3rd for a few seconds. The neatest shit is in 2nd gear when after i hit it hard, the tach and speedo shoot up to 60mph and then hang out there for about 2-3 seconds while the tires get grip :) :)

I can't get 5th to chirp, can you? I wish I had enough traction to only chirp second. For me, first is to get rolling, second is to get to third and third is get haulin'. Until I hit 25psi anyway, then the tires break loose again :(
BTW, DJTJ you need to chill out and quit calling people 'stupid' and being an ass just because you don't like their answer. You've only been here 2 days and you're already making enemies. The only thing revving between a double clutch will do is ruin your transmission. Just keep doing it, you'll see. ;)

Hmmm....I think that chirping just may not be in your genetics. I can chirp second all day long.

41792, RE: LOL... Posted by Collente, Jan-16-03 06:18 AM
Fusion: Average labor is high $400's.
I dont believe that upgrading your fuel system will do ####. Just my opinion, if your fuel is fine and your turbo. Don't touch it, that is not the problem.

No way. I love to see old posts come back up. It's great for nostalgia, and it means people are actually using the search.
