I had my car serviced the other day, when I picked it up the guy told me that I've got a "leaky" headgasket and it needed to be fixed soon. My car shows no signs of it though. It leaked less than a pint of oil since my last oil change, no smoke from the dipstick, bubbling coolant, white smoak from the tailpipe... Am I missing something, is there a sure way to know? He's also saying he won't know how much it will be to fix it until he "tears down the engine" I really need help here guys, I have the money and means to have it fixed, but I don't to fix something if it isn't broke. TIA!!

BTW: It's a '99 GS with 75K miles

The same thing happened to me last week. Took my car to the dealership foe the balljoint recall and they call me up and say that me head gasket is "leaking". Once again, no symptoms. Think they were pissed cause they had to do work and weren't getting paid for it and tried to screw me. Are we missing anything here?

check around teh back of the block around teh cam seals and stuff if no symptoms then dont replace watch oil level, the valve cover gasket can also leak watch that tooo...

Yeah check the back of the block for an oil leak beginning at the head gasket, not above. And you machanic should have a price for you on a simple headgasket repair, if they can't give you a price I'd look into doing it yourself, or finding someone who isn't setting you up to be raped on price.

Thanks for the replies guys. My next question is this... Is the MLS gasket the best headgasket replacement? If so, where can I buy one from? I'm actually thinking of letting Satan do it, they're really the only ones around that are willing to do it. Sorry for the questions, just want to make a wise choice.

Yes, the stock MLS replacement is the best headgasket to get. You can get it at a local Dodge Parts Center. I would take your car to another (reputable) shop to check the head gasket.

try getting under the car if there is oil all over like on the tranny and oil pan then you probably need a head gasket.

Satan told me they wanted $947.00 to replace it. I imagine prices are fairly close from dealership to dealership.
