From a 5-10 mph, if i punch it in first gear, it feels like the car doesn't want to go. First I thought maybe my tires weren't grippin, but the treads look fine. Then I thought maybe the clutch is going out on me. It's be 65,000 miles and I think it's still the first clutch.

Well, today on the highway, there was traffic so we were movin like 15 mph... I switched lanes and floored it to bring myself up to speed, but the car took way longer to get there then I thought it would take.. the car behind me had to brake hard for me.

All of a sudden I smelled something funny.. kinda like a copperish smell. I was fully in gear, so i wasn't riding the clutch or anything either.

So do you think it's the clutch? I did the 4th gear test (rev to 4k, ease the clutch and if it stalls the clutch is still good) and it seemed fine.

What else could it be? Bad spark plugs? Clogged fuel injectors? I don't think it's that though, cuz the car isn't hesitating.. just doesn't seem to "grip", if you know what I mean.

Did it kinda smell like rotten eggs?? Maybe the cat? I would think that it was either the fuel system or ignition, just my .02

From what you described it sounds like the clutch is slipping. Most of the time when clutches go out its like BAM, no clutch but maybe you are lucky. The smell of burning clutch is very distinct, although in 2gnts its not as bad as other cars. In the celica it makes my eyes water, its that bad.

It could be other things, but the way you described punching it and then the smell make me suspicious of the clutch.

Sounds like a clutch but check make sure you check you plugs and wires too if they are realy old that may be a factor as well. A sliping clutch smells realy bad and once you smell it once you never forget it.

hookup corbins gauge and see your a/f readins.. the ecu may be dumpin lotsa fuel or sumthin....

try to start from a dead stop in second.... w/out revvin higher than like 2-2500 rpms...
if you stall, its clutch time :(

how hot is your engine runnin??? maybe your short ram is sukkin waaay hot air??? or maybe the filter element is clogged...

to test clutch, while you are driving watch your tach, if it goes up and you don't speed up, well, it's the clutch. you could also try to get the car moving from a stop in 2nd gear, that's another way of testing it.

well, I tried moving in second from a standstill and it was fine. I didn't even rev it, just slowly eased the clutch and it started rolling. So then, I dunno what the problem is. But I definately smelled copper and sulfur after flooring it in first that day.

u can abuse the clutch and heat it up or cook it ina day or hour or so and it will cool and still work as normal after it cools down if u didn't scar it horribly
