40788, Engine rebuild almost done. Tips/pointers for the break-in that my mechanic might not know about? Posted by GhEttOrAiD, Jan-03-03 08:35 PM
Car will be finished VERY SOON... I just want to know::
1.) how many miles I should break it in for 2.) how low should I keep rpm's 3.) what weight oil/how often to change it for these early miles..
etcetera etcetera etcetera
thanks in advance!!

There is alot of debate on how long you should break in an engine. This last rebuild I did, I gave it about 500 pretty easy miles. Just make sure to vary your rpm for the first 100 or so miles. Town driving is best for this. Lots of stop and go. Don't lug the engine.
On the flip side. Some people say to drive it hard for 15 min (take her up to 2500 rpm, then nail the gas till you hit 6k, do this for the 15 min, dont lug the engine), then let it cool down totaly. Then repeat. Do this about 5 times and your rings "should" be seated perfectly. Break in time is like 1 day tops. Think of it this way, how long do you think a nascar engine has to get broken in.
O yea I see your boosting...I didn't boost at all till I got at least 100 miles on my engine. (I disconected my wastegate actuator so the flapper would never be shut)

Yeah that sort of relates to one of my concerns.. The electronics are still configured to boost 6psi on low/9 on high... The AFR is set for stock injectors (I THINK!!) Was running rich before the rebuild.
Will this be a problem? Do I NEED to circumvent the turbo? It hits pretty late cuz its kinda big... about 3,800rpm...
But yeah I _do_ want it done right... I'll prolly call friends shop up.. they know their shit..

DON'T BABY THE ENGINE. You want the rings to seal properly and that won't happen unless you get some pressure in the cylinders. Read the link I posted and follow it exactly. Works GREAT!

Not to be a pecker head. But i would not run it hard. It is not the best for a street car nor race car. Some opt to go that way but all nascar guys break there motors in on a dyno not full throtal either. I would call a profesional and get there advise. Because for the money u spend in the motor it should be done right.

I've heard both ways of breaking in an engine works well. However from my experience with working on boat engines, mostly V8's, if something isnt right it is going to break no matter what you do. just my opinion. Paul

I wouldn't beat the piss out of it, but I wouldn't drive it like granny either. Keep out of boost. Period. For about 1000 miles. Hate to tell ya, but lean back out to stock, otherwise you may wind up with cylinder wash from the extra gas. Also, run conventional oil for at least 2K miles. -=B-=

^^^^^^^^^^^ aww crapppp
*sigh*
If i shift early as hell, keep fuel lean, for 1000mi will I be fine? bypassing the turbo sounds like a lot of work. Maybe I'll ask mitsu's opinion.. LoL
