40768, Eeeeeettttt's water pump time!!!!
Posted by HiOnPSI, Jan-03-03 04:46 PM
Tomorrow i'm starting to dig into the timing belt shit to do my water pump. I need a little advice and good luck. A) I need to find a crank pulley puller...what's your suggestions? and b) Has anyone else followed matt's idea and drilled holes to get to the motor mount brackets?? Fill me in..thanks!

Crank pulley puller: Rent from autozone. $35 refunded when you return it to them. "3-jaw 5-ton 6-inch puller" Pull from the INSIDE :)

Just finished putting my crank pulley back on an hour ago... you'll need a longer bolt (M12x1.75x150mm) to get it back on... or a big sledge hammer I guess. The oven trick didn't work for me.

Just be glad you don't have to replace the oil pump. :) ...Water pump's only one piece and 2 rubber gaskets.

don't know if you have a harbor freight near you but you can get a SET of pullers for like 25 bucks from them. Comes with 3 pullers. That is what I got worked great.
Putting that bitch on was a muther...had to tap her on with a brick of wood and a hammer till I got the bolt to thread. After you get the bolt on there It goes pretty easy.

There's only one gasket with the water pump..at least, that's what I got and that's what CAPS shows, as well.

And what do you mean pull from the inside?

I did this a year ago, but I really didn't want to drill holes into the frame. It is possible to raise the motor high enough to get the motor mount bolts out. That's what I did.

you dont HAVE to drill holes, but i'll tell you if you are going to be taking off the motor mount plate a number of times, it will greatly speed up the process. I could not get the motor mount plate off with the front half of the timing belt cover still on. I broke that off to get enough room to wiggle and maneuver around the plate to get it out. It works that way. You have to raise and lower the motor to get the right amount of space to get the plate out. After you get the crank pulley and the motor mount plate off, its really pretty straight forward from there. Be SURE to get a longer crank bolt, or else you chance stipping the crank threads. Get the 3 jaw, 5 ton puller, and then back out the STOCK crank bolt about 1/8" or so to start. Put the puller on, and be SURE it's centered properly, and not crooked (this is important). Now tighten the puller's center bolt onto the stock crank bolt, SLOWLY, DONT hammer down on it, esp if using an impact wrench. Once the pulley has come out that 1/8" or so, then take off the puller, then back out the crank bolt antother 1/8" or so. Repeat the process with the puller about 3 times like this using the stock crank bolt. After 3 times, put in the LONGER crank bolt, and then keep pulling 1/8" at a time. Doing it this way does take some time, but this will keep enough threads on the bolt inside the crank threads, to help distribute the puller's force. It will also keep the bolt from bending, and stripping out the crank or bolt threads. Take your time, and be patient. It generally will take about a good 20-30 minutes doing it like this, but it has worked countless times on my car, and others i have done. Even on a 95 GS that i did. Good luck. Check out my write up in my sig if you need some more info.

Dammit, i got it all back together and it's doing the same thing it did last year right before it blew up. It's not idling right, you come to a stop and almost die. I can't even get it to hold coolant, i put a little in and it bubbles over. Not to mention my timing belt was disgusting, and it overheats. I'm gonna put some more in tomorrow morning and see if it holds. it's not leaking, i just dont think i can get enough in it. I'm so sick of this shit, i'm not pulling it all apart again!! Fuck it, i'm going to bed.

update: I took the car to my girlfriends house, whre i'm at now, and it's been sitting for a few hours. I checked the coolant level and it still needed a little, so i gave it more. I don't know how long it takes to circulate or what the capacity of our coolant system is, but i think i've used a little over a gallon...not much though, since i originally drained it. No leaks. The car runs much better, I don't know what the deal was with last night, maybe computer getting accustomed to slightly different timing? Well, whatever it is, it's not doing it now. Thank god. Guess i'll just keep an eye on teh coolant levels and see what happens.

My car did the same thing. Ya think it's full if water and it over heats and you have to add more. It was just bubbles in the system. I think you home free now ;-)

just did mine today and replaced the belt and water pump. yes the mount plate was a pain but i raised and lowered the engine untill it came out. i got an awsome pulley remover from advance for like 24.99 3prong 5ton. but i placed a hole punce inside of the balencer hole to remove the pulley. i find that easier than inching it out. when you put your coolent in the engine did you run the engine with the cap off and keep adding untill full and water temp is warm and reading right. that allows the water to fully circulate through the engine befor pressurizing it. has anyone else ever noticed that our water pumps such they always loose the bearings. imo later
