40688, Manual Trans Fluid Change
Posted by extreme97nt, Jan-02-03 07:41 AM
Ok im going to change the oil in my trans and would like to know what to put back in. I looked in the manual but could not find what to use. Also how many quarts does the trans take? Where are the drain and fill plugs? and any other tips you could give would be greatly apprecieated. I am running a turbo if it would make a difference.
TIA
Paul

Ok, so I guess it is a dealer type item only. I know ford uses atf in the manual gearboxes. That is the reason I was asking. Any one else use anything differet?

Only the mopar stuff will work. You can also go to mitsu and order it.. but make sure that it's the right one... supposedly anything else would destroy the tranny.

I think it's called Manual Transaxle Fluid for NVT-40## I forget the exact numbers... when i get home i'll check.

I think you need 2 quarts.. i bought 3, but never got around to changing the fluid yet.. stupid winter.

if a shop put something beside the mopar/mitsubishi tranny fluid if would go back and make them put the right one in.

I have a 5spd, and when I changed my tranny oil I put in BGSyncroshift. I definately felt a difference with my shifting after the change, shifted smoother and easier to get into gear. Bought mine from www.roadraceengineering.com

B&G isnt that great on our tranny's....You should really use the mopar fluid because other stuff doesnt protect the syncros etc. well enough and your tranny will wear out quickly... I was going to use B&G myself until i read something about peoples tranny blowing up with it.

The specified fluid is blended for the materials used for our syncronisers. Other stuff just doesn't work well. The smooth shifting that you feel when you use something else (like BG) is actually the Syncros wearing out. To make for a nice long tranny life, I recommend the Mopar fluid.
