I've owned my 97 Talon for about 4 months now, and I'm getting ready to hit 60k miles. I want to change my timing belt and all the other things (tensioner and pully, water pump) that people typically change from what I've read.

I have the VFAQ on replacing a timing belt on a 2GNT, but I was wondering where I could acquire the specialized tools that are referenced in the FAQ, and also if anyone had any pointers for someone who's relatively new to auto maintainance.

I plan on getting the factory service manual before I perform this job, in case anyone wanted to suggest that. If anyone has anywhere (aside from Mitsu/Chrysler themselves) they can recommend for getting that it'd be appreciated also.

Any advice?

I think the worst part of it is getting that crank pully off with the 5 ton puller (or whatever that tool is called :) It's not too bad - just be careful with your aligning of the timing markers and don't damage the pulley as you take it off, and you'll be fine!

I really don't know where you can get the special tools but I think you can buy the tools at any chrystler dealership

make sure you have a good floor jack. he hardest part is getting the 3 bolts out that bolt the motormount to the engine. if you get air tools its not that bad as far as having to hold the camgears and crank to loosen bolts. if you crank the impact wrench up all the way it'll take the bolts out without even turning them. o wait you don't need to take the camgears off unless your gonna do the head gasket. make sure and get a torque wrench-$20 to by at autozone. just remember the autozone ones don't go lower that 10ft-lbs. you will probably need a small 3jaw, 2or 3 ton puller i don't remember which, to get off the crankpulley. and if you don't replace the tensioner you will need a vice and a pin for it. i got a pin from dodge, one of the mechanics had it laying around. then i took it to mistubishi to have them pin it for me cause idont have a vice. they will check it to make sure it is still good too.

u will need a puller for the crank pulley napa carries them schecks chain has them any auto parts, get a torque wrench, and if u dont have an impact wrench they are getting pretty cheap now,

if u dont have an impact gun get a breaker bar or really long ratchet handle or u could do the old skool slide a box end over the handle and push hard then break knuckles when it slips =)
