40270, HELP!! entire cylidner not working until car warmed up Posted by Eagle 5, Dec-25-02 01:37 PM
ok. my car ran fine today. then tonight when i was getting ready to come home i go to start up the car and it barely starts up , then it sound bad like a cylidner isnt firing at all. not just a few misfires. it feels like the whole darn thing was out. engine was idling roughly and would rev up rough like somehting was pushign againt it. after it got about 1/4 of the warm warmed up thoug it went away and seemed ot be fine again. during the rough time though my check engine light was flashing. after the problem went away the light stopped flashing and just stayed on. i did the funky check engine light thing with my car thats gives me a code and says whats wrong and it said it could be ignition coils 1 or 2 or multiple misfires. about a month after i got m car the same thing kind of happened but it only di it once in awhile. car would ile fine, then miss, idel fine then miss. it didnt just not work. plugs and wires were replaced and ive been o them now for about 15k miles or so. maybe more aroun 10-12 but not really sure. also the last time it was the same thing. could it just be that i have a bad spark plug and so the one cylinder wasnt workign at all (maybe even more than one cylinder)? or could it be something else? the coed has a list of things it could be such as plugs, wires, t-belt, and about 5 other things. if it was a plug would it start workgin fine once the car got warmed up? after it ot warmed up, car ran fne ad didint miss again. idled fine. or ocule it be something else?

I would try the easiet thing first, spark plugs.

try preforming a compression check on ur engine, should shed more light on ur problem.

Here is what I would do (in order)
replace plugs replace wires swap coil packs with a known good one pull injector and clean it compression test depending on compression test results, a leakdown test might be in order
I can't think of any 1 cylinder out- situation that wouldn't be brought to light by diong this, and it is always good to replace plugs and wires (can't hurt!). Neither can a clean injector... -=B-=

same thing has happened to me after the car sat for about 4 days in ~20 degrees. i didn't get a cel though and it was fine after warmup, just like u said. if i remember correctly, this has happened to some others during the winter. haven't figureed out what it is yet, and it doesn't happen often. i've recently replaced the wires(msd) and plugs and i'm pretty sure my coil is starting to go, so i'm going to replace that soon. i've done a comp test within the last couple wonths and the #'s are all ~210, so all i can think of is maybe the coil is malfunctioning in very cold weather.

if it continues to do it.. there is a very easy way to figure out which cylinder (if it's a specific one) is the problem. while the engine is running ruff.. pull one of the spark plug wires off.. if the car runs different, that cylinder is not the problem, put the plug wire back on and move to the next one.. until you find that when you pull the spark plug wire from one of the cylinders and the engine sound/smoothness doesn't change, then that's your cylinder that is giving your problems.. unless it's not a specific 'cylinder not firing' thing.

well i started my car up this morning and it was fine. CEL i on but that just needs ot be reset. my dad said he thinks it could have been the EGR valve getting stuck or somethign and casuing the car to not run right. or it oculd hav been bad gas maybe or something. i put a tank a 89 in just to help out but wil be ogign back to 87 after this tank. i assume its th egr valve now since the car is fine and there is no missing of any sort whatsoever. who knows. also
is it posible to block off the egr vavle or something? i know the turbo guys do that or they do somethign with it? just curious
