39598, Jeep Throttle Body review. (kinda long)
Posted by Malenko, Dec-15-02 01:00 PM
I posted this at DSMTuners.com and I am reposting it here for you guys as well.

first off I would like to state that I am only a customer, I am not a member of Carolina DSM nor am I getting anything from them for reviewing this. with that crap outta the way here goes:

Price: $175 + $100 core charge
Very fair, Ive seen other 60 mm TBs going for $200+
the TB came polished, and the intake was port mached for the TB
Mine was this much because I did not supply the Jeep TB or eclipse intake manifold. Also came with the needed gaskets.

Delivery: 3 weeks
Not bad at all, to make it and ship during the holiday mail rush, 3 weeks is a very good turn around time.

Install: 2 hours (maybe more maybe less for you)
Install took me longer then it should have, my father's garage is filled to the brim with tools, just not many metric ones. Nothing uncommon to install, only thing I didnt have was a 2foot extention, but a buncha smaller ones hooked together did the job.

And now the part you wanted to read:

Performance.
WOW! Throttle response is incredible, it feels like Im driving a 5-Speed again, when the car shifts instead of dropping to 3K like it used to it now hangs alot closer to the 4K mark, VASTLY inproving acceleration. It used to take a stretch of road to get up to a hundred, it takes alot less time now, but the long straight roads were too busy for me to go any faster (to all you "speeding that fast is illegal people" If I dont go 80, I get passed like Im sitting still)

The intake makes a "whistling" noise fromt he sheer amount of air being pulled through, using my S-AFC I determed that it occurs around 2150 RPM and thorttle at 14.5%. Speaking of my AFC, I returned the fuel curve back to 0% correction across the board. After the Jeepie was installed the A/F gauge ran closer to stoich then when the stock Tb was on (it ran rich). I will be tuning my car to get a closer to stoich reading.
I am positive that I will get even more gains when I tune the fuel to the new TB.

Overall I am EXTREMELY pleased with the product, and I would whole heartedly endorse it to others, its one of the best dollar to performance mods Ive done to my car and will be even better when I go turbo come tax time.

If anyone has any questions, dont hesitate to post here.
Below is pix of both TBs

I have a jeep TB and port manifold also. The gains are there. Orginally I thought the whistle was from air being sucked into the filter (AEM shortram), but it isn't. I took the filter and intake pipe off, so there was just the manifold and TB (I highly do not advise anyone to do this). Started the car up and tap the gas, DAMN!, the whistle is ear cutting louder. I think the whistle is caused by the air going over the plug in the stock manifold (idle plug). I could be wrong.

My Jeep TB does seem to ilde funny sometimes, like when coming to a stop (car in nuetral, foot on brake), the rmps will stay at 2k until I make a complete stop then they drop down to 900rmp. I think my ECU is doing this, because it is the only thing that knows if I am moving or completely stopped. To test yours cruise along at 50mph and then just put the car in nuetral and look at the tach.

Another thing to check is get that extension out again and stick it in between the gas pedal and the seat. Make sure the gas pedal is to the floor. Then pop the hood and check to see if the TB is opening all the way, if it isnt adjust the cable tension (but watch out for high idle).

While I can take no credit for this little venture, I will gladly vouche for the quality of product and knowledge behind it. Toney(1TuffRS) and DOug are both members of our club CarolinaDSM. Basically what Malenko got was the result of a long process that took some research and testing on Doug's part. He took the original 2 write-ups that were done on the Jeep TB install, did some tweaking and then applied the changes. Before he even let the first one go to Toney he put it on his car for a week or 2 to make sure everything worked properly. This applies to every one that ships out,m it will go on his car for testing to make sure all is well for a couple days and then come back off, get cleaned up and shipped to you. Just to give some background Doug is a fully certified Mopar tech and our saviour at times. I will fully back his knowledge and in this case product. At least for once there is someone that is providing a real product and not trying to make a quick buck and pull the wool over everyones eyes. If anyone is interested in the upgrade I suggest contacting Toney and getting your order in.

this idle problem happens to me too TalonSpeed, but I have a stock TB. I thought I had it fixed after cleaning the Throttle plate and tightening the cable, but the problem has come back. ???

I have had no problems at all, including any idle problems. Item installed better then most OEM stuff =)

I feel the jeepie is one of those mods that dont need any supporting mods but gets better and better as the mods do. Im sure my car will be kicking names and taking ass when the UDP and AEM cam gears are installed. And Im sure it will come in handy when the star stage II goes on :)

My major reason for writing this was to let those people who got scammed on the 60mm billet TBs know there was an alternative that not only exists but works, and well!

As for the whistle, it neither loud nor annoying. It only happens at certain throttle/RPM positions and it turns a few heads now and then =) I get a kick out of it.

I fully stand behind this and I feel that Toney and Doug are doing an excellent job. The both are very nice and answered all my questions, even allowed me to make payments before making and shipping it.

Thats great news Malenko. I'm glad to hear that it's good quality work. I think Toney's doing the board members a GREAT service by selling these - good job man. :thumbsup

I can vouch for the gain. I got approximately .2 sec improvement 1/4 mile times on my setup. No idle problems here. I kind of like the whistle too. :)

Cordell, 2k sounds a bit high for a rolling idle. I can't find the thread that explained this so someone correct me if I'm wrong. The ECU does determine idle differently for stop and roll. When your not moving - the ECU wants to hit a particular RPM(~800-900) at closed throttle. When you're moving - the ECU wants to hit a particular MAP value at closed throttle. I don't know if that helps or not, but it could be the MAP sensor. First before you go checking MAP values and whatnot - it's more likely that spring tension could be your problem. To make absolutely sure that the plate is closing when you let off the gas - try putting some slack in the throttle cable and see if it still gives you high idle when rolling. One other thing, you may try to adjust the IAC tip 'out' a bit further and see if that clears up the problem. Sorry bout the partial hijack Malenko, I just hate to see a fellow 2gnt'er struggling with Jeep TB issues.

NO NO NO, my 2k rmp rollin idle isn't caused by my jeep TB, atleast I dont think it is. Me and my cousin got real ghetto today. I put the car in nuetral and parked on a hill. I gave the car some gas and it returned to 900rmp, no problem. I did the same thing while my cousin pushed the car down the hill(still in nuetral), the rmp flutter between 1700-2100 (like it always does).

My ECU knows I am moving so it idles the car up a bit. I wonder how it can do this?? I have a brand new TP sensor. Spring tension is a problem that I have but it isn't nearly as bad as it was. A couple of washers solved that.

So let me get this straight, when you guys drive your cars 65mph (with stock TB or Jeep TB) and u put the car in neutral the rmps return to 900rmp?? I thought car were supposed to do that but this doesn't bother me anyway.
39609, RE: Jeep Throttle Body review. (kinda long)
Posted by TalonSpeed, Dec-16-02 07:28 AM
I am not here to say Doug and Toney dont do quality work, cause they do. The Jeep TB is one of the best mods for the $$$.

To futher explain the rollin high idle. When I am driving and put the car in neutral the rmps are dropping fast because I am out of gear and off the gas. As the rmps get close to 1200, the ECU raises them back up to 2200 then lets it down to 1800 or 2000. I can tell the ECU is doing this because bad spring tension would cause for the rmps to stick at one point not flutter up and down. The flutter isnt fast at all and most of the time I dont even know it is at 2krpm or fluttering at all.

To tell you the truth I have gotten use to it.

mine does the exact same thing ('98 GS)... rolling up to a stop light with it in neutral or clutch in the Tach hovers around 2k then when the car finally stops it settles around 900-1000. I always assumed it did this on purpose to keep the rpms a little higher to facility shifting etc... dunno

What kind of TB do you have?

i just found this post, and what im reading is that this a 'diamond in the ruff' sorta mod....cuz they are doing it really cheap. and what service is performed exactly besides the 60mm TB, cuz you mentioned somthing about the manifold? do there bored out the manifold to match the TB?
39613, RE: Jeep Throttle Body review. (kinda long)

Here's some info about the intake sleeve:
Jeep TB - 2.6 inch diameter sleeve - 2.67 inch diameter lip
Stock - 2.35 inch diameter sleeve - 2.44 inch diameter lip
I have a short ram air intake. It came with a blue silicone flex connector(hard to see in my sig) that fits snugly onto the Jeep TB, whereas it used to slip easily onto the stock TB. It's not too much of a stretch(haha) because the Jeep inlet is only about 1/5th of an inch bigger at the lip and one quarter of an inch bigger in the sleeve.

Sean - yeah they port match the upper intake manifold as well, so you get the FULL 60mm effect - which is nice.

The sleeve he is referring to is hard to get on. I have an AEM short ram intake. I had to put my sleeve in the microwave, get it real hot and then it barely slid on. Another thing that helped was some shrub cutters, place the blades on the insde and pull the handles apart, it stretches the rubber some.

If it fits the stock TB then it can be stretched to fit the Jeep TB. Now that it is been up there for about 2 months the sleeve slides on with easy now.

Wow... what a pain in the @$$.
Jeep throttle body... easy
Remembering 2gnt password... impossible.
Yeah, so here I am. I took the neon boy's ideas and tweaked it a bit and put it on an eclipse. Of course.. I think it was Don's and Toney's idea to get me to do it anyways so props to them.

Uh, let me think... where to start...
http://www.carolinadsm.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?s=a410a7c4ec78eadd2899ff382f864dec;act=SF;f=10

http://dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24512

http://dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19329

That should be enough reading to keep you busy for a while.

On the mod... the stock intake may not fit since it's a stiffer plastic and not softer rubber like most after-market intakes. It's a tight fit getting it on there. I wouldn't recomend using any metal objects that might bend, gouge the aluminum TB, or rip the rubber sleeve.
The PCM (dealing with a chrysler computer not mitsubishi) has set fuel maps it is put it to at different throttle positions. Depending on whether it's in idle, acceleration, cruise or heavy acceleration/WOT determines which fuel map to go in to. MAP sensor, Intake air temperature, coolant temperature and a few other sensors determine how to adjust that particular air/fuel mixture. At WOT the computer looks at upstream o2 only and tunes from that.
There are threads here:
http://dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=22803
which I discuss the AIS motor and how it affects idle.
I may have forgot to mention this so here's an extra tid bit. TPS sensor signal can make the ais move. The computer sees the car goes to wide open throttle and so the AIS motor opens all the way too. Why? If the AIS motor shut... and you let off the gas all of a sudden, the car would get nearly zero airflow. So the AIS stays open, allows in air, and slowly closes it down to the idle position. With the Jeep set-up, having the Tip of the AIS motor properly positioned is key otherwise... the computer may tell it to go to one position... but it's physically in another.
Um... to clarify... the set-up I'm doing is port matched at the throttle body, not the entire thing. I don't have the tools to go in to the manifold at those angles plus, why port only half of it?
As far as the availability of more set-ups... I'm currently without both cores and throttle bodies. Plus I would like to see if I can produce a better set-up. This will require me to have both the parts and the time to get things better. Good news is that everyone that sent toney and I money... got their products within a month. Some less. Additionally... we won't be taking in money unless we're about to take off the set-up to send it to you. Since there's only two cars to test them on... there will only be two people who sent money.
Like Don pointed out... EVERYTHING goes on my car first. I won't send it to you unless I think I've worked out all the problems. Talk with Toney about being put on the waiting list. If I am able to make some more and feel like they are good enough to sell, then we'll be in touch with you. However, I don't promise I will have any within a month's time.
I spend alot of time on CarolinaDSM and here lately on DSMTuners. Feel free to catch up with me on those boards as I don't spend alot of time on 2gnt. If you can, re-use an already existing thread regarding the throttle body set-up. Too many posts and I can't keep up.

Is the Jeep TB a ready bolt on with sensors? Also is it 60mm all the way through and does not neck down at all?
39618, RE: Jeep Throttle Body review. (kinda long)
Posted by 1TuffRS, Dec-17-02 05:14 AM
they neck down to 55mm where they meet the manifold, after doing 4 of these setups these are the only ones that we have come across. We might port the entire TB out to 60mm, but Im gonna have to ask Doug about that one. And yes it does come with all the sensors because some of them have to be hybridized, that is why we need all of your stock sensors as part of your core (if u choose to send it).

As far as the list goes just send me your full name, email address, and phone number (number is optional) and I will add you to the list. There are already three people on the list and we will be making these first come first serve, so if you want it u might want to go ahead and send me your info. My email address is in my sig.

I also recieved a jeep TB assembly from 1tuffRS.

I don't believe they are sending out anymore until they resolve an issue regarding the springs breaking, resulting in stuck open throttle.

Other then that happening to me, the TB was great and seemed to provide a small gain. The whole assembly (TB and intake manifold) came already together, sensors and everything. Plug and Play. Also came with a new gasket for the intake manifold. Very professional IMO.

They are good guys to deal with, so if you have any interest, keep them in mind.

Posted by 1TuffRS, Dec-27-02 01:26 AM
well we arent having issues with it breaking since yours is the first and only one to have that problem. That particular TB setup is the one that was on my car for almost a month and before that Doug had it on his car for about a week to make sure the mod went smoothly, so it was thoroughly tested and proved reliable. The spring that we used was off of a 97 2GNT and I personally see it as being a freak accident, but just so everyone knows we are looking in to this and trying to find out exactly what made it break. We are, however, trying to work with you so we can help you out.
39624, RE: Jeep Throttle Body review. (kinda long)
Posted by Doug99rs, Dec-27-02 09:28 AM
Thanks Mike for promoting the set-up Toney and I are trying to offer even though you had problems with it.

While the spring breaking has concerned me quite a bit I have been thinking about ways to improve it. Like I've said on the other boards we are holding off on selling more until we find the best way to provide quality mods at a cheap price. The feedback I'm getting from the other buyers is helping me find where the weak links are. Like Mike said we're holding off sending anything out until we find out what needs to be changed at what needs to stay. Hopefully, with the cores that are on their way... We should be able to start back with more R & D to give just that.
We'll keep 2GNT, DSMTuners, CarolinaDSM and anyone else posted as we have more information.
Doug

well before I installed it I took it to my dad, a former mechanic , and I took it into work (Daimler Chrysler Assembly - Newark,De) and the engineer there said the odds of it breaking were slim and none since it was an OEM spring (just bent)

So if my dad and an engineer that makes 100 grand a year say its good to go, who am I to argue?

of course if it breaks I'll be the first to bitch :p but I doubt it'll happen. Toney and Doug, sorry I havent sent my core back, Im in texas right now
