How much modification is required to get the evolution 3 engine to fit a 97 eclipse spyder. The motor is also know as a 4g63. Any information would be appreciated

someone told me that it should bolt right up, is this true??

NOTHING other than STOCK is bolt "right in".

to drop an Evo engine in would prolly be the same as me trying to put a 4g63 out of a GS-T in my car. The evo motor is facing the same way as a 420a motor. All Eclipse Spyders (turbo and non) face the other direction.

Like he ^^ said. Read the things we've seen B4 section B4 making a post.

It's real easy to do a search and the "Things We've Seen Before" section before making posts like that. It is not worth the time, effort, or cash to install that motor into your car. Rebuild the 420a and get boost or sell it. Simple as that.

you guys are jumping on this person a little hard.. especially since most of you read what he said wrong. he's got a 2g SPYDER.. which means he's running a 4g64, and could drop in a 4g63 pretty easily.. but it would have to be one out of an eclipse because of the motor orientation. but he might be able to get away with just using the tranny from a 2g turbo eclipse and the motor from the evo (which SHOULD be the same, but there might be miner differences).

i read exactly what he said, if it was as easy as you think it is, why dont you think more mirage boys would be doin the swap. it has the 4g64. once again, you would have the full conversion, ecu, the motor, custom mounts, swap your dash with a gst dash, axles and other major stuff. ive heard of boys getting nice power by boosting this motor on built internals. just like a swap on a eclipse n/t.it will not go in easy and dont let nobody tell you that.

Haha.. you kids have it messed up :-) ..

You can bolt-on an EVO 1-3 Motor into a 1G and 2G but not a 3G..
You can bolt-on an EVO 4+ Motor into a 3G.. but not on a 1G and 2G.

The orientation has been changed. The 4G64 in the 3G Base Model is different from the 2G Spyder NA's ones.

Keep that in mind..

I've got a quwhees widebody kit, all molded. Air ride suspension, lambo doors, fiberglass color matched interior, dual exhaust, etc. I haven't touched the motor yet though. Trying to make it a complete show car.

The 6 bolt motor will not bolt right in a 2g. You have to do some work on the motor mounts. Three mounts on the 2g are attached to the tranny, with one being attached to the timing belt area of the engine. The 1g motors have 3 mounts on the block and one on the tranny.

EVO 3 motor would drop into a 1g, but it will take some work on a 2g.

And the 4G64 is in the same place as the 4g63 on the Spyder...why would he have to flip stuff around?

As for the newer EVO motors fitting in a 3G...I'll believe it when I see it.

Because Mitsubishi changed the orientation of EVO4+s and 3G Eclipses.. as compared to 1G and 2G and EVO1-3s

People in the 3G Eclipse forum claim to have done it.. well not actually doing the swap, but converting their 2.4L into an EVO4 motor..

If he has a 4g64 non-turbo can't he take the DOHC head from a 4g63 and the turbo from a 4g63 turbo and make his car turbo pretty easily?

that's why he said take the head from the 4g63, otherwise you could probably just remove the turbo system without needing to swap the head also.
but hey.. the 4g63 head may not fit.. the bolt pattern and/or oil pathways and cooling pathways maybe different.

I thought I read something a while ago that you could just take the turbo system from a 4g63 and it would bolt onto the 4g64 (with the stock 4g64 SOHC head) but you would just need to modify the downpipe to clear the oil pan or something..
anybody know? hehe.

Yes, you can swap in an EVO 3 4G63T into your 2G Spyder. Check out http://www.magnusmotorsports.com for more information. Some guy on the 1gina2G yahoo mailing group has done it on a previously-powered 4G64 so it is possible. The other people who have posted are correct in that a EVO 1-3 are able to be fitted into a 1G or 2G. The EVO 4+ motors cannot fit. They supposedly can fit into a Mirage and 3G.
