39068, Engine not firing.....looking for possible causes Posted by Kiku, Dec-07-02 10:40 AM
After about 5 months of downtime, i finally have my new crower/je/arp all around engine put together with *everything* except my crower rods new, and installed in the car.
First crank it didnt fire. I confirmed that there is spark (through the painfull way hehe).
So i figured it may be bad gas (i am getting gas into the engine) as i had a full tank that has been sitting in the car and not being used for over 5 months.
So i drained 16 gallons and proceeded to throw it down the drain (a $22 94 octane procedure) and put in fresh 93 octane (about 5 gallons).
It still doesnt fire.
Brand new plugs (like i said, everyhting is new about this engine pretty much).
One thing that I do notice is that the starter is making a "raw raw raw" noise which is not normal from my experience but i havnet heard my car in a long time so i may be wrong.
I also noticed that the engine is not turning that fast but again I dont know if it is normal or not.
Tomorrow I am going to take out the starter and replace it with another one i have spare (again, new hehe).
One another thing that got me worried a bit but not sure if its normal or not is that i installed a brand new oil pump and from cranking the engine (not yet running it) i am not seeing any oil come through the turbo oil feed (which is tapped from the back of the block - I have the HRC turbo kit). Is this normal i.e. should no significant oil pressure build up until the engine is running 750-1000rpm?
Thanks for any tips. it got a bit chilly outside so i'm going to tackle the rest of these things tomorrow. Here is an overview of my setup:
1997 chrysler sebring coupe I4 420a HRC stage 3 upgrades Crower rods JE Pistons Short block (minus the oil and water pumps) assembled by accurate power (www.accuratepower.com) machine shop with ARP bottom end studs ARP head studs 440cc/min injectors walbro hi-flow in-tank pump Whole new timing belt mechanism New tranny (with Quaife LSD and CM stage 4)
Thanks again guys.

as far as the gas is concerned, you might wanna change your fuel filter and also the intank filter on the fuel pump. also throw a bottle or 2 of injector or fuel system cleaner. mine was down for 2 1/2 months and when i started it i put 2 bottles of injector cleaner in with a fresh half a tank. it would run but i had starting probs. instead of the "raw raw raw" noise, it would stick on the end of the "raw" if you know what i mean. it went away though after i replaced the fuel filter and fuel pump.

You could try jump starting it, it almost sounds like the voltage has dropped too much from sitting there. I know it sounds simple, but sometimes the simple solutions are right. -=B-=

Be sure your battery isnt low on charge. If it is, the motor may crank to slow, and the voltage may be too low to fire the car. If its turning that slow, you will prob not get any oil pressure out the feed line until the rpm's come up a bit. But to be on the safe side, be SURE the oil pickup tube is on the block! I have experience with that one :) Also double check ALL wiring connectors, all sensor connections, ect...Its always somthing simple..usually

Are you sure the fuel pump is working?

Ok found the problem (thanks to Armond30!).
Cams were not setup correctly. The intake cam was setup just like the exhaust (meaning all the cam dowel pins were pointed the same direction - where they should be opposite).
After i fixed it, it fired right up!
Thanks for the tips guys. _________________ Vinnie Lima kiku@asog.net AIM: Kiku888 1997 Chrysler Sebring "Silver XTC" I4 420a w/ HRC Stage 2.45 w/ FMIC 14.7@97 mph@6psi Proud member of the ASOG BoOsT JuNkIe Crew

Yeah valves that open and close at the same time are never a good thing. Glad all is working now. I want a report on how she runs after all this down time Vinnie.
