i would think a problem with the fuel pump or fuel pressure, since you said it will run sporadically. maybe even clogged filter or injectors...

same exact exct shit happened to me ove 2 months ago. still dont no exactly what it is.haha.
EDIT: i would loose fuel pressure r some eason then the car would die. if i let it sit for a few mi it would start for like 5 sec then die. if i kept cranking it over and over it just wouldnt start. so i replaced fuel pump. same problem. replace fpr. same problem. thinkin its the ecu. its an on going mess i tell you!

I had a problem like this a few months ago. Driving along and all of a sudden the car would die.... Pop it into nuetral and start it. Drive fine for a few minutes and it would do it again. Finally got it back to the dealer (the thing was only 2 days under my name) and after a week he gave me the ambigous phrase "you blew a fuse". He never said which on but the car runs fine now.

hey.... TrishaTalon(who's not on the board anymore) and I had the same problem with our 95s. After going thru much of the same crap that dealers will tell you, we both had to replace our ECUs. It only seemed to happen when we were going at high speeds/high temps on the freeway. Mines would cut out completely- tach and speedo would drop to zero when i hit 80 MPH. I'm pretty sure his 95 ECU is fucked like ours were. It should be a Mitsu/Chrysler recall imo.
